Mr. Zinger’s Hat by Cary Fagan, illustrated by Dušan Petričić, is a great introduction to the art of storytelling. Every day, Leo bounces his ball in the courtyard and every day, Mr. Zinger, a writer, walks by in his black suit and hat. One day, Leo’s ball knocks Mr. Zinger’s hat off and it lands on Leo’s head. Leo and Mr. Zinger discover that there is a story inside the hat, trying to get out. Mr. Zinger begins the story, but pauses at crucial moments and allows Leo to fill in the details. Leo and Mr. Zinger bring their story to its end and Mr. Zinger heads home to write more stories. Leo meets a new friend, Sophie, and they discover the story hiding in Leo’s baseball cap.
