Juna’s Jar by Jane Bahk, illustrated by Felicia Hoshino. Juna’s family always keeps a large jar of kimchi in their fridge. When it’s gone Juna gets to keep the jar. Juna’s best friend is Hector. Hector and Juna always put interesting things in the jar when they go on adventures in the park. Colorful rocks, caterpillars, and bugs have all had a turn in the jar. One day, when Juna goes to get Hector at his grandmother’s apartment for another adventure, she finds that he had moved away with his family. She wasn’t home when he came to say goodbye. Juna is very sad. Her brother Minho wants to cheer her up, and takes her to find something new to put in her jar. She gets a fish, a bean plant, and then a cricket. Each night after everyone goes to sleep, Juna climbs into the jar with each new thing and goes on a magical journey in search of Hector. Soon Juna finds Hector asleep in his bed next to the old kimchi jar filled with colorful rocks that she had given him. “Bye Hector,” she whispers and flies home. The next day Juna takes her jar to the park where she makes another friend. See this book listed in our catalog
