The Dead and the Dark

March 16, 2022 by Andie Leave a Comment

The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould
Format: Book
Who it’s for: Teens

The Dead and the Dark alternates perspectives between Logan, the daughter of popular T.V. ghost hunters, the ParaSpectors, and Ashley, a small-town girl whose boyfriend just went missing, as they try to figure out what is plaguing the town of Snakebite, Oregon. Missing teenagers, ghosts, family secrets, and more keep this book entertaining from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this book, it was completely captivating! The way that Gould writes makes the characters feel realistic, and the book overall just hard to put down. The twists and turns of the mystery keep readers guessing and curious until the end. I highly recommend this book if you’re in the mood for a small-town paranormal mystery!

Girl Versus Squirrel

December 3, 2021 by Andie Leave a Comment

Girl Versus Squirrel by Hayley Barrett, illustrated by Renée Andriani
Format: Book
Who it’s for: kids, everyone

Pearl likes putting up bird feeders and watching the birds snack on the seeds and peanuts in her yard, but when a pesky squirrel comes and dines instead, she is determined to do what it takes to keep the squirrel away from her bird feeders! Will Pearl be able to outsmart the squirrel, or are her plans no match for such a speedy opponent?

This was such a cute book, and the factual information in the back of the book about squirrels is a wonderful addition to the story. This book can serve as a young readers’ introduction to bird (and squirrel!) watching, and maybe it’ll even inspire some readers to set up bird feeders in their own backyard – maybe even some squirrel feeders, too!

Love Lettering

Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn
Format: Book
Who it’s for: Adults

Love Lettering follows Meg, a calligrapher and social media sensation, as she’s confronted by a client from her past who believes she’s included a hidden message for him in the work he’s commissioned. After an awkward conversation, Meg can’t seem to get him out of her head, and she asks to see him again. What begins as an odd encounter turns to friendship, and possibly something more.

This book was a little hard to get into in the beginning, but once Meg and Reid begin their adventure around New York City, it’s hard to put down! What makes this book great and worth a read is that it doesn’t follow your average plot for romance novels, so it was exciting to see the way Clayborn added some variety to the genre!

The Mysterious Benedict Society

September 6, 2021 by Andie Leave a Comment

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
Format: Book
Who it’s for: kids, everyone

The Mysterious Benedict Society follows four children – Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance – as they join Mr. Benedict’s secret organization in an effort to defeat evil. After completing tests and solving puzzles, the four unlikely friends are brought together in an effort to solve the mysteries plaguing their little town. Why are people disappearing? What’s going on at the Learning Institute? Follow the adventures of these four unlikely friends as they work together to solve the mysteries.

This book was enjoyable from beginning to end! It was quick-paced with lots of little twists and turns and a strong found-family theme. While this is a children’s book, I’d recommend it for anyone of any age. If you like mysteries, I recommend giving this book a try!

The Mysterious Benedict Society is the first in the series, and has also been made into a TV show on Disney+.
