What would a fox do with a chicken? Anyone who knows anything about the food chain would guess right. The Chicken Thief, a wordless picture book by Beatrice Rodriguez, tells such a story a bit differently. Rabbit and Bear live happily in their abode with a flock of chickens. One day, while they’re happily lunching, a fox comes along and steals a chicken! Off the fox runs with the chicken, through the woods, the deep dark forest, the mountains, and a rocky meadow. Through underground tunnels, to the beach, across the ocean, and finally to a fox’s den under a large tree, all while a desperate trio – the bear, the rabbit, and a rooster – chase closely to Fox’s tail, and an unlikely relationship begins to unfold along the journey. This story tells a tale of acceptance, and not judging a book by its cover. See this book listed in our catalog

A Balloon for Isabel
Submitted by Ms. Tammy!
A Balloon for Isabel by Deborah Underwood. The animals are excited to be graduating from kindergarten. Every animal will receive a brightly colored balloon at graduation, except the porcupines–they will be receiving bookmarks. Isabel and her porcupine friends really want a balloon. She points out to her teacher that they have already received bookmarks for all the previous holidays. Her teacher refuses to change her mind, it being dangerous to give a porcupine a balloon. Isabel starts to think of different plans to solve the problem of their quills popping the balloons. She wears a pop-stopper box to breakfast. When this doesn’t work, she straps on pillows, and eventually tries wrapping her friend in packing bubbles. Finally, on the day of graduation, a solution is found: gumdrops on their quills to cover the points! In the end, her porcupine teacher is revealed, wearing gumdrops on her quills, and holding a special balloon of her very own! See this book listed in our catalog

Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories
Submitted by Ms. Sue!
Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories by Audrey Penn, illustrated by Barbara L. Gibson. Making memories of the ones we won’t see anymore is one way to make you feel better about losing a loved one. Chester Raccoon’s mom explains to Chester and his friends how they can “make a memory” of their friend Skiddil Squirrel after he has had an accident and won’t ever be returning. Chester and his friends, the other forest animals, gather at Skiddil Squirrel’s favorite place, Butterfly Pond, where they remember things that happened to him there. Chester watches a butterfly resting on an acorn and, after waiting patiently for the butterfly to fly away, he picks up the acorn. With all the funny memories they recalled of their friend, Chester decides to take the acorn home to make a perfect memory. This story will help young children understand the meaning behind attending a funeral or a memorial service and how “making memories” can help them find comfort. See this book listed in our catalog
