The Very Fairy Princess
The Wide-Mouthed Frog
Submitted by Ms. Catherine!
I love pop-up books, and I love frogs. So, when I found The Wide-Mouthed Frog, I was very excited! This book, written by Keith Faulkner and illustrated by Jonathan Lambert, is now one of my favorites. The friendly frog, with is pop-up wide mouth, goes from animal to animal asking what each one eats. The bird eats worms, and the mouse eats berries. But the alligator wants to eat “delicious wide mouth frogs!” What is a frog to do? Children will laugh at how the frog solves his problem, and avoids becoming dinner. This is a short and simple book that is great to read aloud. Kids will love the bright pictures and the fun pop-outs on each page. Princess Pigtoria and the Pea
Submitted by Ms. Carol!
Princess Pigtoria and the Pea written by Pamela Duncan Edwards and illustrated by Henry Cole is the classic story of the princess and the pea with a little twist, since the princess in this story is a pig! Princess Pigtoria has a problem: her palace is a pigsty and she has no money to fix it up. She sees an ad in the paper requesting a bride for the prince and she figures if she marries the prince maybe he would help her fix up her palace. The prince is very picky and so when he meets Pigtoria he is not at all polite. He decides to place a pea under her pillows to see if Pigtoria is a proper princess, since only a proper princess would be able to feel such a small pea. In the meantime, Pigtoria meets Percy the Pizza Pig when she orders a pizza. They eat and dance the night away! Then Pigtoria goes to bed. Pigtoria can’t sleep because all the pizza, popcorn, and pie crumbs are pressing through her pajamas. She tells the prince the next morning what an awful night sleep she had and of course the prince is very happy and assumes he has found the proper princess since Pigtoria, he thought, had felt the pea. When Pigtoria finds out that the prince had placed a pea under her pillows she is very angry, and decides she likes Percy the Pizza Pig much better. So Pigtoria marries Percy and lives happily ever after! A very cute sory based on an old classic. See this book listed in our catalog
Please Take Me for a Walk
Submitted by Ms. Tess!
I’m becoming a huge fan of Susan Gal. I loved her first book, Night Lights, and I love this, her second one, dedicated to her dog, Wanda Woo! In this story, an expressive and engaging canine pleads with the reader to “Please take me for a walk.” This pup wants to chase squirrels and birds, and greet all the neighbors. He wants to say hi to all the shopkeepers, especially the butcher. He wants to watch the kids playing in the park, and the guys shooting hoops. He wants to feel the wind and the sun, and he runs and rolls in the grass. Plus there’s lots a new dogs to meet! But most importantly, he wants everyone to see him with his very best friend! If you don’t want to take this dog for a walk after all that, I don’t know what’s wrong with you! This woofer gives The Pigeon a run for his money. See this book listed in our catalog
Little Hoot
Submitted by Ms. Tess!
Little Hoot by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jen Corace is one of the most adorable books I’ve read in a long time. As we all know, owls are nocturnal, and Little Hoot is no exception. But, unlike most children, Little Hoot doesn’t want to stay up late! He wants to go to bed early like the rest of his forest friends! “I don’t give a hoot what time your friends go to bed.” says Papa Owl, brewing himself a pot of coffee. Mama Owl says “Stay up and play for one more hour and then you can go to sleep.”And so Little Hoot goes off to play on the jungle gym (with his other nocturnal friend the bat), he builds a fort, he jumps on the bed, he skateboards… until it’s finally time to sleep! Mama and Papa tuck him in and “they owl lived happily ever after.” See this book listed in our catalog OR watch it via Tumblebooks
