This book is a One Maryland One Book selection for 2020.

This historical fiction novel is set on the island of Jeju in Korea. Over many decades, beginning with the Japanese occupation during the 1930 – 1940’s and during World War II and the Korean War.
During this turbulent time in history, two young girls Young-sook and Mi-ja, both from different backgrounds bond. Their close friendship begins over their love of the sea and working in their villages’ all-female diving collective. The haenyeo woman are trained from a young age to expand their lungs and go diving on the ocean floor to harvest food. Their livelihood and traditions are intertwined. Their diving skills are handed down for generations.
Mi-ja, a city born orphan living nearby with a neglectful aunt and uncle is caught stealing food in the fields of Jeju by Young-sook and her mother. Her mother as head of the collective, decides to take Mi-ja on and teaches her alongside Young-sook to dive. The girls become lifelong friends enduring many life altering events that impact their lives growing up.
The political unrest and unspeakable tragedies inflicted upon the villagers are part of the horrors of war. The impact on their island from famine, to extreme punishment, and demands of the opposing government regimes are inflicted upon the villagers who struggle to comply.

Young-sook and Mi-ja endure impossible choices that tear their friendship apart causing disappointment, anger and judgement that take generations to understand and forgive.

Sixteen year old Starr is living a double life.  One Starr lives in a black, lower income neighborhood and feels like she doesn’t quite fit in.  The other Starr attends a private, mostly white school and feels like she can never quite be herself.
One night, Starr is riding in a car with her childhood friend Kahlil when they get stopped by police. After a short but tense exchange, Kahlil is fatally shot leaving Starr as the only witness.
A whirlwind of events send Starr’s two worlds crashing into each other so she is left with no choice but to find her voice and decide who her one true self is and what she stands for.

 

The audiobook was amazing and the movie was a very good adaptation of the book although they did have to condense some characters.  I read the book first and it helped to better understand some parts of the story that I might have missed otherwise.

Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks by Jason Reynolds tells the story of ten different middle school students walking home from school and their adventures on ten different blocks. Each kid is dealing with their own struggles and are caught up in their own lives. So much so that no one sees the school bus falling from the sky. This  poignant story demonstrates how everyone is following their own path, home from school and in life.

I love Jason Reynolds, and I love this book. From a girl who just wants to skateboard but who is confronted by bullies, to a young boy hustling pennies so he can buy ice cream for his mom, this book includes small, slice-of-life tales from a variety of different point-of-views. It really demonstrates that everyone is going through something. Even the toughest boy in school has problems he is struggling with at home. Even the funniest girl in class is using humor to comfort herself and her family. Everyone in the story is connected. It was fun to hear about the same small moments told from different perspectives and hear small comments about characters from previous chapters.

I would highly recommend listening to the audiobook of this title. It has a full cast, and it really makes the story come alive and captures your attention.

Because the most important question still remains: did anyone see that school bus fall from the sky?
