Bears

Tiptoe Joe

Submitted by Ms. Janis!

Tiptoe Joe by Ginger Foglesong Gibson. Tiptoe Joe, a large bear in red sneakers, tiptoes through the countryside. Kids will love watching Tiptoe Joe lead a group of his animal friends on an adventure. Joe instructs his buddies to be as quiet as possible. They tiptoe—as well as they can on their hooves, claws, and furry feet—through a field, across a fallen log leading over a stream, through the woods, and up a hill. When they arrive at Joe’s, he shows them something very special. It’s his brand-new baby bear cubs, fast asleep in their mother’s arms! See this book listed in our catalog

Bear Gets Dressed

Whether you are a person or a bear, sometimes it is hard to decide what clothing to wear when you get up in the morning. In Bear Gets Dressed: A Guessing Game Story, written by  Harriet Ziefert and illustrated by Alyssa Capucilli, Bear must decide what to wear before he goes out to enjoy the day. Poor Bear knows that that sometimes the weather can make one outfit better than another. However, he just isn’t sure what to wear. Each page features a simple lift-the-flap that asks the reader to pick the best outfit for Bear. Once the reader picks the best clothes, you can lift the flap to see if you were right! With repetitive and rhyming text, along with sweet and playful illustrations, this simple book could become a family favorite! See this book listed in our catalog

Hank Finds an Egg

August 13, 2013 by Sara 2 Comments

Submitted by Ms. Allana!

Hank Finds an Egg by Rebecca Dudley is a charming and beautifully photographed wordless book. Hank is walking through the forest when he discovers an egg on the ground. He quickly realizes that it came from a nest above, so he attempts to return it. He can’t quite figure it out, because the nest is up quite high, and try as he might he just can’t reach! At the end of the day, he camps out nearby with the egg close to him, keeping it warm. With the dawn of a new day will Hank be able to figure out his problem? Perhaps, with the help of another creature who happens to live nearby! Put your own words and expression to this adorable, sweet story, and your little ones will marvel at the pictures in this book! Chu’s Day

“When Chu sneezed, bad things happened.” So begins Chu’s Day written by Neil Gaiman, with pictures by Adam Rex. It’s the adorable story of a baby panda with a hazardous case of hay fever. Chu wears goggles and a helmet, just in case he sneezes, which gives you an indication of how disastrous his sniffles can be! He starts his day at the library, where’s there’s lots of dust. Will he sneeze? No, thank goodness. Then he goes to the diner, where there’s pepper in the air. Does he have to sneeze? No. Whew, that was a close one. But what will happen when Chu and his parents visit the circus, and he feels like sneezing? And how will he feel after he lets loose? If you want to find out, read Chu’s Day. Today! Bear Despair and I Want My Hat Back

February 11, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

An important lesson I am sure you want to impart upon the children in your life that you care for is how to not get eaten by a bear. As respected news journalist Stephen Colbert has pointed out many a time, bears are the number one threat to national security. Luckily I have two books for you and your child that will help you avoid ending up the lunch of a hungry bear.

Bear Despair by Gaëtan Dorémus teaches us that a sure fire way to get yourself eaten by a bear, is to steal that bear’s teddy bear. In this wordless story we watch, with horror, as a fox makes this mistake, purloining a stuffed animal from a slumbering bear. The bear retaliates. Unfortunately, Lion, Bird, and Elephant do not learn from Fox’s mistake, and also end up in Bear’s belly. What will become of them? You’ll have to experience Bear Despair for yourself to find out! This book will especially delight fans of The Chicken Thief and other books in Enchanted Lion Books’ “Stories Without Words” series. See this book listed in our catalog

Another helpful cautionary tale is I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. In this story a bear is looking for his hat. He asks his various fellow forest dwellers if any of them has seen it. Fox says, “No. I haven’t seen your hat.” Frog says, “I have not seen any hats around here.” Turtle says, “I haven’t seen anything all day.” Rabbit, who is conspicuously wearing a hat says, “Why are you asking me. I haven’t seen it. I haven’t seen any hats anywhere. I would not steal a hat. Don’t ask me any more questions.” Hmm… Bear questions other animals until he realizes: He has seen his hat. As we’ve learned, it is a bad idea to steal from a bear, but it’s also a bad idea to lie about it. What happens to Rabbit? If you’re dying to know, check out I Want My Hat Back today. This book was a Blue Crab Award winner, and a Geisel Honor book, so it is especially great for kids who are learning to read! See this book listed in our catalog

Silly Doggy!

February 8, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

Silly Doggy! by Adam Stower. One morning, while looking out her window, Lily sees the most amazing thing. She runs outside and, sure enough, digging through the trash, is a lost dog. Lily and the big, brown, fluffy dog quickly become best friends. Her dog isn’t like most dogs; he can’t do tricks, doesn’t eat his food, and never does what he’s told. Lily doesn’t realize her big fluffy dog is actually a brown bear that is missing from the local zoo. Lily’s mommy is sure his family is looking for him, so Lily creates a “Found Dog” poster, and hangs it where she’s sure no one will read it. The zookeeper reads the poster, and shows up to bring the bear back to the zoo. Lily is sad, until she finds a big kitty in the yard, or so she thinks it’s a kitty… See this book listed in our catalog
