May 7, 2020 by Ms. Karen Leave a Comment

The Wolf Will Not Come  by Myriam Ouyessad, illustrated by Ronan Badel
Who its For: Kids
Format: Book

It’s the end of the birthday celebration for Rabbit and time for bed. But Rabbit needs the answer to one burning question before sleep-“Are you sure the wolf will not come?” “Very sure”, Mom reassures little Rabbit. “The wolves are far away in the mountain woods”. But one anxious question leads to another. “There is a woods nearby, how can you be sure there is not a wolf hiding there?” asks Rabbit. “That woods is small. A wolf couldn’t hide there.” “But what if it knows how to stay out of sight?”. Question after question, as Rabbit imagines (with pictures to match on the opposite page) how a clever and crafty wolf could make it all the way to their apartment. Finally, “Goodnight, my Rabbit” says Mom and the room goes dark. Until… [Knock, Knock, Knock!] Who’s that? Is it the WOLF??? What do you think? This book filled with gentle French charm and mild suspense will keep your little ones guessing till the surprise ending.

Bedtime for Sweet Creatures

February 19, 2020 by Jeanette Leave a Comment

Bedtime for Sweet Creatures by Nikki Grimes, Illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon
Format: Book
Who it’s for:  Kids

This new, fun book for kids is written by Nikki Grimes, an award-winning author and the illustrations are by Elizabeth Zunon who grew up in the Ivory Coast.  Ms. Grimes hasn’t written a book in a while so this was a good one to read.  Ms. Zunon has a background in art as she works in paint, collage, sewing, silkscreens, jewelry and more.  The illustrations reflect her interest and are a combination of realism and fantasy.

Mommy and Daddy are trying to get their cantankerous toddler son to go to bed but the boy definitely isn’t interested in settling down.  Mommy tries to coax him into bed and then reads a story to him.  It looks like it’s going to work.  Until…  See for yourself how she finally solves the problem.

This is a good bedtime book to read to little ones for Black History month.  Read this delightful book to see how mother finds a way to calm her son.

Hooray for Today and Hooray for Books

February 9, 2018 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Jill!

Hooray for Today by Brian Won. Hooray! It’s going to be a good, good day! Owl is wide awake, has loaded up her wagon with her favorite things, and is ready to play! She just needs a friend to play with her. Small problem: Owl’s “day” is the middle of the night, and she can’t seem to tempt anyone out of bed for a playdate. She offers her silly hat, her trumpet, balloons, and a stack of books to her friends, but only gets the same answer: “Not now, I’m sleepy!” Poor lonely Owl… it’s turning out to be a bad, bad day. The sun is rising as she straggles back to her nest to sleep, all alone. But wait! Will a surprise ending turn her bad, bad day around? Read along to find out.

Hooray for Books by Brian Won. Turtle is looking for his favorite book. This wouldn’t be so hard, except that Turtle and all his friends LOVE to read and LOVE to share their books with each other – Hooray for books! But all that reading and sharing means there are stacks of books everywhere, and Turtle’s favorite could be in any of them. Everyone tries to help by offering Turtle some of their own favorites to read – would he like a book about unicorns from Zebra? A story about eagles from Owl? How about Giraffe’s roller-skating book, or Elephant’s how-to-juggle guide? But no, sometimes only your own favorite book will do. Will poor Turtle ever get to read his very favorite story again? Follow along in this joyful celebration of reading and sharing to find out.
Don’t miss Hooray for Hat either! See all three books listed in our catalog
(Full disclosure: Brian Won is a very nice person who sent me lovely stickers after I tweeted about Hooray for Hat being an awesome storytime book, which makes me like all of his books even more.)

Pajama Pirates

December 6, 2017 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Shannon!

Get ready for an exciting tale of adventure on the salty seas! Pajama Pirates written by Andrew Kramer and illustrated by Leslie Lammle encourages readers to use their imagination and transform the world around them. As the pajama pirates prepare for bedtime, they see beds transform into boats and carpets become rippling seas. Enchanting watercolor illustrations bring the story to life as the pajama pirates set sail and encounter rival ships. By thinking hard and working together, they are able to outwit their foes and return safely to shore. I love an opportunity to use my pirate voice and this book does not disappoint! Pirate encounters on the stormy seas also offer great moments to engage readers with exciting sound effects including splashing waves, cannon balls, and thunder. Although the story is full of excitement, it is also written in rhyme which can be easily transformed into a gentle, singsong story that works perfectly for bedtime.
