The Little Bit Scary People by Emily Jenkins is about a little girl who uses her imagination to help herself feel better about the scary looking people she sees each day. Maybe the scary looking boy with the spiked hair likes to curl up on his bed with his cat. Maybe the mean, scary bus driver makes deliciously wonderful breakfasts for her family. And maybe the principal, with her scary fingernails, is lovely as she twirls during the dance class she takes each night. She knows for sure that the scary looking teenage girl wearing the leather jacket actually plays football with her brothers and always lets them win. She knows this because that scary looking teenage girl is her very own sister. Maybe, just maybe, some people aren’t as scary as they seem. The illustrations, by Alexandra Boiger, are delightful. Each page expresses just what this little girl is feeling and thinking. This story is a modern lesson in not judging a book by its cover, and it’s a great way to help a child feel better about people who may look a little bit scary to them.
