Ten Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin Jr. In this attractive counting book the ten little caterpillars featured on the cover creep and crawl through gardens, vegetable patches, and apple orchards. Each caterpillar gets its own spread, with one climbing a cabbage head, another carried off to school in a jar, and another falling into the sea. As children turn to each page they’ll find familiar images, such as a rose or a bee, while expanding their knowledge of others, such as a muskmelon, monarch eggs, and even a sea bass, all identified with labels. In the predictable ending, the tenth caterpillar emerges from his chrysalis a beautiful butterfly. The concluding pages identify each caterpillar with information about what they eat, and reveal the type of moth or butterfly they become as a result of their metamorphoses. Submitted by Ms. Amanda!
We all know the song “The Eensy Weensy Spider” and can sing it on cue, but what happens if the Eensy Weensy Spider doesn’t want to go back up the water spout? The Eensy Weensy Spider Freaks Out by Troy Cummings is the story of what happens when the sun dries up all the rain and the Eensy Weensy Spider does not climb up the water spout again. Eensy Weensy is just too scared to climb the spout again. The next day the story is all over the Web and she is so embarrassed. Her friend the ladybug tries to cheer her up and get her climbing again. First, Eensy climbs a flower pot and realizes that climbing isn’t so bad. Next, the ladybug encourages her to climb a fireplug, and a dog, and then a mail box, and finally back up the water spout! Eensy is so excited she doesn’t want to stop climbing, so she climbs a crane, a hotel, a radio tower, and then to the tip-top of a rocket ship! She realizes that even though she fell down the water spout the world is a big place with lots of places to climb, and even though she fell down she should try again. The Croaky Pokey
Submitted by Ms. Janis!
The Croaky Pokey by Ethan Long. As you may have guessed by the title, this is the Hokey Pokey amphibian style, which has lots of kid appeal. As the story/song begins, children are invited to join the frogs and follow the lyrics and movements (“Put your right hand in, / Put your right hand out”) but then the words change: “Hop the Croaky Pokey / As we chase a fly around, / Right in the frog’s mouth! WHAP!” The cute cartoon illustrations feature animals at a pond, including a number of frogs, none of whom are skilled at catching bugs. The humor continues as the fly stays just out of reach and can’t be caught. Children will be giggling, singing, and dancing in no time. They will especially like the surprise ending. A great choice for humor and fun. See this book listed in our catalog
Big Rig Bugs
Submitted by Ms. Tammy!
BIG RIG BUGS By Kurt Cyrus. Soon after a litterbug tosses a tuna fish sandwich from his bulldozer, the construction bugs are called for duty. Children of all ages will enjoy following along as big rig bugs roll out of every hole to get started on the clean-up. The short rhyming couplets describe the work each bug does to clean up the messy tuna sandwich. The first to take the lead is Millipede, and then comes Cricket to clear the thicket, followed by ants, Weevil, Earwig, and many more bugs. Each page displays oversized pictures of each bug with insect-sized construction machinery behind them. The bugs each take a turn until the sandwich is compacted into a small round ball and carried off by the dragonfly. It’s a job well done, everyone. See this book listed in our catalog
