Dog in Boots

July 22, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

Dog in Bootsby Greg Gormley. Dog just finished reading all about a cat who wore a pair of magnificent boots. Dog heads to the local shoe store and emerges with some splendid footwear. But Dog soon discovers that his fancy shoes are not splendid for digging. He tries flippers, high heels, even skis, but can’t find anything that is just right. Dog returns to the shoe store to see if they have anything that would be good for digging, swimming, scratching, running, and was nice and furry too. The shopkeeper quickly points out that Dog already had the perfect shoes for him: they are called PAWS! Dog is pleased with his practical paws and heads out to do all his favorite things. Jacob’s New Dress

April 7, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tess!

“There are all sorts of ways to be a boy” is the heartwarming message of Jacob’s New Dress by Sarah and Ian Hoffman, illustrated by Chris Chase. Jacob loves to play dress up at school with his friend Emily. “I’m the princess.” he proudly says, donning a sparkly pink dress, and a crown. Christopher says that boys shouldn’t wear girl clothes though. When Jacob gets home from school he tells his mother this. She says “Of course they can,” and hugs him, and reminds him on Halloween he dressed as a witch! Jacob loves his witch dress. He likes the way the black lace twirls around him. “I want to wear my dress to school!” he says. “Let me think about that,” says his mom. The next day Jacob comes downstairs for school with a bath towel wrapped around his shorts and shirt. “It’s not a dress,” he assures everyone who asks, “It’s a dress-thing.” But that’s not good enough for Christopher, who yanks it off while they’re playing outside. Jacob cries when he comes home. “Can you help me make a real dress?” he asks his mom. “Let’s get the sewing machine.” she says. Jacob is excited to show it off to his dad. “I can see you worked hard on that dress,” Dad says, “It’s not what I would wear, but you look great.” At school the next day, Christopher has had enough. “Why does Jacob wear dresses?” he asks. Their teacher says “I think Jacob wears what he’s comfortable in. Just like you do.” Even when kids laugh at Jacob, he doesn’t care. His dress surrounds him like “soft, cottony, magic armor!” Many children are what the clinical world call “gender non-conforming.” Much like little “tomboys” – girls who like traditional “boy” things – there are many boys who like traditional “girl” things. And that’s okay! We don’t know what a gender-nonconforming child will be like when they grow up, but we do know they need support from their families, teachers, and other people in their lives! Tiptoe Joe by Ginger Foglesong Gibson. Tiptoe Joe, a large bear in red sneakers, tiptoes through the countryside. Kids will love watching Tiptoe Joe lead a group of his animal friends on an adventure. Joe instructs his buddies to be as quiet as possible. They tiptoe—as well as they can on their hooves, claws, and furry feet—through a field, across a fallen log leading over a stream, through the woods, and up a hill. When they arrive at Joe’s, he shows them something very special. It’s his brand-new baby bear cubs, fast asleep in their mother’s arms! See this book listed in our catalog

Extra Yarn

October 3, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Amanda!

Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett is a sweet tale of a little girl named Annabelle and her magical box of yarn. Annabelle lives in a dull grey town. One day she finds a box of every colored yarn so she decides to knit herself a sweater. When she is finished there is extra yarn so she knits a sweater for her dog too. There is still extra yarn. Annabelle knits sweaters for her friends, classmates, teachers, and doctors but somehow there is always still extra yarn. Next, Annabelle knits sweaters for all the animals and for things that usually don’t wear sweaters. There is always plenty of yarn. The dull grey town is transformed. The word spreads all over and people came from far and wide to meet Annabelle. One day an Archduke arrives in the town and offers Annabelle ten million dollars for her magic box of yarn but she won’t sell. The Archduke steals the box of yard only to find the box is empty for him. When the box finds it’s way back to Annabelle it is again full of extra yarn. Beautiful pictures and a magical theme make this a great read for little ones to enjoy as they guess when the supply of yarn may end and what will happen next. See this book listed in our catalog

Submitted by Ms. Catherine!

Whether you are a person or a bear, sometimes it is hard to decide what clothing to wear when you get up in the morning. In Bear Gets Dressed: A Guessing Game Story, written by  Harriet Ziefert and illustrated by Alyssa Capucilli, Bear must decide what to wear before he goes out to enjoy the day. Poor Bear knows that that sometimes the weather can make one outfit better than another. However, he just isn’t sure what to wear. Each page features a simple lift-the-flap that asks the reader to pick the best outfit for Bear. Once the reader picks the best clothes, you can lift the flap to see if you were right! With repetitive and rhyming text, along with sweet and playful illustrations, this simple book could become a family favorite! See this book listed in our catalog

Ella the Elegant Elephant

July 9, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Rachel, the libary’s summer intern!

Ella the Elegant Elephant by Carmela and Steven D’Amico. Ella the elephant has just moved to a new town and is nervous to start at her new school. Thank goodness her grandmother has sent her a special surprise–a beautiful big red hat. Ella is thrilled to have something so special, but at school among a sea of the same blue uniforms, Ella’s hat stands out. Will Ella and her hat find a way to fit in?  An adorable story about school bullies and being yourself, the book’s exotic locale (“somewhere in the great, wide Indian Ocean lie the Elephant Islands, hidden by a fog so thick no human being has ever found them…”) and whimsical illustrations are sure to please. This book is only one of the many of adventures of Ella, so young readers can continue to delight in more fun with Ella and her friends. See this book listed in our catalog
