The Land of Lines

The Land of Lines by Victor Hussenot. In the land of lines, anything is possible… There are red and blue lines everywhere, crisscrossing each other to form a forest of scruffy trees and pointy rocks. They twist around to form canyons and mountains, waterfalls and swamps, and even weird shapes that seem to sprout from someone’s imagination. Amidst this chaotic forest of blue and red lines are two individuals, seemingly lost. One is a boy drawn in blue, the other a girl in red. Once they find each other, they embark on an adventure that is both dangerous and exciting. This wordless picture book has such a unique art style that it’s almost difficult for the reader to take their eyes away. It consists entirely of three colors: blue, red, and another mysterious color that emerges about halfway through the story. The Land of Lines paints a world where anything is possible, and readers young and old alike are sure to find it charming. See this book listed in our catalog

Sky Color by Peter Reynolds is all about a wonderful artist named Marisol. Marisol loves to create and share all kinds of works of art! When her school needs a mural painted for the library, Marisol volunteers to paint the sky. She quickly realizes that there isn’t any blue paint and she can’t paint the sky! As she heads home for the day, Marisol watches the sky from her bus window, her porch, and eventually in her dreams. The next day she notices that the sky is not always blue, and comes up with a creative solution to her dilemma. A little ingenuity and creativity leads Marisol to create a brand new color – “sky color”- which is perfect for the mural. See this book listed in our catalog

The Day the Crayons Quit

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. You spend all day coloring all manner of things, from space dragons to ocean liners, but have you ever stopped to think about how your crayons feel about it? Sure, it’s easy to spend all day coloring things all willy nilly without a care, but did you know that they are deeply emotionally invested in the things you color? The blue crayon is all tired out from coloring the ocean every day, the pink crayon is angry because she feels like she isn’t used as much as the other colors, and the orange and yellow crayons are constantly fighting over who gets to color the sun. All of these issues can add up to a very stressful day for the poor crayons. In this book we find out just how close our crayons are to reaching their breaking point and why they may eventually decide to quit on us! See this book listed in our catalog

Bear Sees Colors by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman is a simple book about colors. Bear and Mouse are just walking along chatting when Bear sees the color blue. He sees blue flowers, blueberries and a blue pail. The author encourages the reader to find the blue things on the page. Then Bear and Mouse and their friend rabbit spy the color red and again the reader is encouraged to find the red things on the page. The story continues with the colors yellow, green, and brown. This is a cute story about colors and friendship. At the end of the story the animals all get together and have a big picnic with lots of food, lots of colors, and lots of friends. Verdi

September 5, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Wendy!

Have you ever had a day where you just didn’t want to grow up? In Verdi by Janell Cannon, Verdi is a young python whose mother sends him out into the world and tells him to “Grow up big and green.” Verdi is rather fond of his bright yellow skin and racing stripes and doesn’t want to be green. All the grown-up, green pythons he meets do nothing to change his mind. Verdi is sure that if he turns green, he will be as slow and boring as the rest of the grown-up pythons. Verdi tries lots of ways to stay yellow and fast, but only ends up getting hurt and having to have the old greens take care of him. As he listens to their stories, he realizes that they were once young and yellow like him. Verdi still doesn’t want to  be a slow old green, but he finds a way to combine the best parts of staying young and growing up. Cannon’s beautiful artwork and witty dialogue really help capture the spirit of childhood. This book is wonderful to share with children of all ages. We all need a little reminder sometimes that you don’t always have to grow all the way up. See this book listed in our catalog
