Rabbityness

December 2, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Rabbityness by Jo Empson is a book about being special and being remembered. It’s about Rabbit, who likes to do ordinary rabbity things. Rabbit likes jumping, and washing himself, and burrowing. But, he also likes to do a few… unrabbity things. Rabbit loves to paint! And Rabbit loves to make music! He fills the forest with color and sound and, most importantly, happiness. Doing things Rabbit loves makes him happy, and his happiness is contagious! He makes all the other rabbits in the woods happy too. But one day Rabbit is gone. The other rabbits can’t find him anywhere, and they are sad. Rabbit leaves behind a dark hole. But he’s also left behind his gifts of art and music. The other rabbits are inspired to do their own “unrabbity” things, and the woods are filled with happiness again. We should always strive to do good, and work hard, and be someone worth remembering, just like Rabbit. Embracing our special talents and interests makes us happy, and as Rabbit teaches us, happiness is contagious. Teach your child that they can make the world a better place just by being themselves, like Rabbit! See this book listed in our catalog

Pirate Nap

Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by Danna Smith and illustrated by Valeria Petrone is a piratical adventure created from the imagination of two brothers before nap time, all dressed up in their pirate attire including a “white” bandana, “yellow” treasure, a “red” towel. They turn their surroundings into an assortment of booty in an array of colors. All of a sudden they are set upon by a purple monster from the sea, who is actually their little sister, but she grabs the loot and is off!  They hurry quick to catch the monster and find their ship (their bed) with their trusty pirate dog aboard and, with the black pirate flag flying, they eventually settle down to a nap. The pirate mom helps them settle in. “Calm blue water. Briny deep. Pirates, monsters, sail to sleep.” See this book listed in our catalog

Green

There are many picture books about colors. However, Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger surpasses any that I have previously read. Unlike most picture books featuring a color theme, Green is not about learning different colors. Instead, Seeger’s beautiful book is a study of just how varied a single color can be. A 2013 Caldecott Honor winner, this book takes a single color and gives it depth, and makes the color green worth discovering. Each page features the color green in a different shade and different situation. Forest Green features quiet, lush, dark green trees, while Glow Green’s fireflies perfectly illustrate a summer evening. Each page also features ingenious cut-outs that create beautiful surprises on each page. With simple text that is a perfect complement to the amazing illustrations, you will want to pour over this book over and over again. Check out Green by Laura Vaccaro to find out just how much you love this color. See this book listed in our catalog

Monkey Colors

Monkey Colors by Darrin Lunde is an amazing book. Meet twelve monkeys from around the world in this playful introduction to colors. Monkeys come in many colors. Some are brown, some are red, and some are gold. Some have orange feet, and some have pink lips. One monkey even has a blue face, yellow cheeks, a red tail, and a white mustache.  Different monkeys from around the world are pictured in excellent illustrations. At the end of the book there is more information about monkeys and the places they live. The author uses common names so you can search for more information on these twelve monkeys. Also noted at the end of the book, to study more about these animals, is a natural history museum. See this book listed in our catalog

Monsters Love Colors

April 11, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Carol!

Monsters Love Colors by Mike Austin is a very cute book about colors. The Monsters mish and mash and squish and squash their colors. They choose their favorite colors. Red is the color of Roar and Snore. Blue is the color of Scribble and Nibble. Blue monster nibbles his blue crayon. You should not eat crayons, you silly monster! The monsters mix colors together and show the reader what happens when you mix a red monster with a yellow monster (you get an orange monster of course). They mix colors to make all the monsters’ favorite colors. They mix yellow and blue and make a green monster. They mix red and blue and make a purple monster. Now there is just one monster left, and when they ask him what his favorite color is he says “super tropical mega monster rainbow swirl with raspberry on top” so the monsters mix and mash and squash and squish until finally they have a beautiful rainbow monster. The monsters love colors and now they are all super colorful! See this book listed in our catalog

I Know a Wee Piggy

January 4, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

I Know a Wee Piggy by Kim Norman. A fun day at the fair quickly turns to chaos when one boy’s energetic pig gets loose running through the fair. Upside down, Piggy wallows in brown. Not being satisfied with brown, he adds a rinse of red (tomatoes). Soon, he’s adding a wash of white (milk), a pinch of pink (cotton candy), a glimpse of green (grass), and many more colors. Exploring colors has never been more fun as the children try to guess the next color Piggy will want to wallow in. Will Piggy’s day be through after he adds some blue? You’ll just have to follow Piggy through his day at the fair to see. See this book listed in our catalog
