Don’t Touch My Hair! Written and illustrated by Sharee Miller
Format: Book
Who It’s For: Kids

Aria is a girl with ah-maaazing hair. Big and thick, soft with dark springy curls, everyone notices Aria’s hair when she walks down the street and they love it almost as much as she does. Unfortunately, everywhere Aria goes, people want to touch her hair, without asking her permission! Aria tries to hide her hair or hide from people so she feels safe, but when hiding doesn’t work, she escapes. Whether she is deep in the blue ocean, in a steamy jungle, or high in a castle tower, there’s always someone or something who tries to touch her hair and finally Aria. Has. Had. ENOUGH!!

Read Don’t Touch My Hair! to see how Aria finds the strength she needs to set her own personal boundaries while still loving her friends and her beautiful hair.

Quickest Kid in Clarksville

The Quickest Kid in Clarksville by Pat Zietlow Miller, illustrated by Frank Morrison
Format: Book
Who it’s For: Kids

Alta loves to run. She’s fast too, the fastest kid in all of Clarksville and everyone knows it, even with holes in her soles and dirty laces. But today Alta has something else on her mind. Tomorrow she will get to see her hometown hero in person – none other than the famous runner Wilma Rudolph, three time Olympic gold medalist who’ll be appearing in the big parade in town! Wilma grew up here, like Alta . Her family had little money, like Alta’s. But she overcame illness and impossible odds to make it as an Olympic athlete, just like Alta’s dream. Until Charmaine, with her attitude, her uptown shoes and speed to match moves into the neighborhood. Will Alta still be the quickest kid in Clarksville, just like Wilma? This is a great story of girlhood dreams, inspiration and unexpected friendship.

Math Doesn’t Suck

May 8, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

Math Doesn’t Suck by Danica McKellar
Format: Book
Who it’s for:  Teens, Middle School

It may be hard to believe, but math really doesn’t suck.  In fact, it can be fun, or at least you can be successful at it if it’s presented the right way.  Author Danica McKellar started out as a TV actress, who you may recognize as Winnie from the Wonder Years or Elsie from The West Wing, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics and has created a series of math books for middle and high school girls that presents math in a fun and relatable way.

Math Doesn’t Suck features early middle school math concepts, along with Danica’s personal stories, real life applications, and personality quizzes – because what middle schooler doesn’t love those? The second book in the series is titled: Kiss My Math, followed by Hot X: Algebra Exposed.  The last in the series is Girls Get Curves, and yes of course, it’s about geometry!

I was a girl who loved math in school so I hope these books will inspire today’s young women to try on their smarty pants and wear them with pride!

Millie Fierce

September 7, 2018 by Ms. Karen Leave a Comment

Millie Fierce by Jane Manning
Format: Book
Who it’s for: Kids

Millie is such a quiet, ordinary girl that no one listens to her or notices her, or gives her more than a tiny piece of cake at parties. She feels almost invisible, like the smudge left by the mean girls who walk through her chalk drawing on the sidewalk. One day Millie has had enough of being invisible. She gets mad- no, she gets Fierce! Now Millie Fierce stomps about and howls, throws food and leaves muddy handprints on the wall. She even pulls the buds off the neighbor’s peony bush! She is noisy and pushy –and now everyone notices her. But not in a good way. When her wild behavior hurts a friend, Millie begins to rethink her particular brand of fierceness, and finds there is room inside her for both Kind and Fierce.
