Construction

March 31, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Jill!

Construction by Sally Sutton, illustrated by Brian Lovelock. The hardworking crew and machines from Roadwork are at it again, and this time they’re building something really special. Bold, rhythmic text, full of rhyming sound effects, and expertly detailed colored ink drawings show every stage as a multi-racial crew of men and women dig the foundations, pour concrete, raise the steel and wooden structure, install the roof and windows, lay the plumbing and electricity, and paint the walls. The final two full color spreads reveal the secret of what they’ve been so hard at work to build, and it’s something wonderful for the whole town to enjoy! The last page shows each piece of heavy equipment and explains its job, along with a diagram of a construction worker’s safety gear. See this book listed in our catalog

The Story of Fish & Snail

March 6, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Cassie!

In The Story of Fish & Snail Deborah Freedman writes and illustrates a captivating tale of two friends: Fish and Snail. These two buddies live in a story book! One that is nice and safe, which is fine by Snail. But Fish is looking for adventure! While Snail is content to stay at home and pretend to be kitties, Fish wants to show Snail his new book: it has a whole new ocean, secret treasure, and even a pirate ship! When the two disagree, Fish leaves. This makes Snail very distraught. He is compelled to follow his friend into the new story book, despite his fears. Once he arrives they mend their friendship and compromise, playing kitty-pirates! This is a fantastic book for the imaginative child. The suspension of belief required to immerse yourself in the land of a story book makes this a beautiful and entertaining read. See this book listed in our catalog

The Fox in the Library

February 26, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Carol!

The Fox in the Library by Lorenz Pauli is a story about a fox and a little mouse. Fox follows Mouse into the library. Fox wants to have Mouse for dinner but Mouse explains that the library isn’t a forest and you can only borrow things here. Mouse tries to distract Fox by giving him books to read that will give him new ideas. This works because now Fox is thinking about chickens instead of mice. Mouse explains all about the library to Fox: how to borrow books, how to remember to keep them nice and clean, and how to check them out. Fox leaves and returns a few days later with Chicken. Chicken doesn’t look too happy. He is trying to convince Fox that chicken bones are bad for foxes. Then a fox-hunting-chicken-eating farmer comes into the library and Chicken and Fox work together to come up with a plan that will be good for them both. Fox agrees to dig Chicken out of his coop if Chicken will teach him to read and that’s just what they did. See this book listed in our catalog

What’s your best place?  Well, if you’re Lottie Paris or Carl, your best place would be the library! At the library you will discover books about stars, planets, and dinosaurs.  You can even learn about new things, and make new friends! Lottie Paris and the Best Place by Angela Johnson, with illustrations by Scott M. Fischer, is the “best” book for children discovering the magical world of libraries. If you haven’t already – check out your local “best” place, the St. Mary’s County Library: “My place to Learn, Discover, and Relax!” While there, find books about the stars and planets, under the call number J 520, or check out a book or two on dinosaurs in the J 567.9 section.  If you aren’t able to visit your library, you can always visit us online, and read a tumble book or two.  To access Tumble Books, visit our website at www.stmalib.org , under the “Kids” tab, select “Tumble Books.” See this book listed in our catalog

Chu’s Day

February 27, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tess!

“When Chu sneezed, bad things happened.” So begins Chu’s Day written by Neil Gaiman, with pictures by Adam Rex. It’s the adorable story of a baby panda with a hazardous case of hay fever. Chu wears goggles and a helmet, just in case he sneezes, which gives you an indication of how disastrous his sniffles can be! He starts his day at the library, where’s there’s lots of dust. Will he sneeze? No, thank goodness. Then he goes to the diner, where there’s pepper in the air. Does he have to sneeze? No. Whew, that was a close one. But what will happen when Chu and his parents visit the circus, and he feels like sneezing? And how will he feel after he lets loose? If you want to find out, read Chu’s Day. Today!
