Monsters

Something is Killing the Children

February 21, 2022 by Kati Leave a Comment

Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV
Format: Graphic Novel and eBook on Hoopla
Who’s it for?: Adults & Young Adults

Do you remember when you were a kid and that monster was hiding in your closet? Remember how your mind would run wild with thoughts of the most forbidding and insidious creature imaginable? Maybe it had sharp claws, long fangs, and garish yellow eyes. Now, imagine if this creature were real?

The children of Archer’s Peak, WI are being preyed upon by something brought to life by their most terrifying fears. The worst part? This is an evil only the children can see. The people of this small town can’t be expected to defeat an enemy they can’t even see. But the mysterious Erica Slaughter can see them and she kills monsters. Is there hope?

I recommend this enthralling and gruesome horror story to anyone who loves a good monster tale and doesn’t mind the carnage that comes with it. You can find Something is Killing the Children in the Library’s catalog or for instant download on Hoopla Digital.

Bonaparte Plays Ball

May 8, 2020 by Ms. Karen Leave a Comment

Bonaparte Plays Ball by Margery Cuyler, illustrations by Will Terry
Format: Book
Who Its For: Kids

Aliens! Monsters! Skeletons! And …baseball??! Yes, you get all this and more in Bonaparte Plays Ball. It’s the Weird series and vying for the championship are the Little Monsters and the Mighty Aliens. Bonaparte, a determined little skeleton with an unfortunate habit of quite literally falling apart, is anxiously watching the game begin. The Aliens score a 3 run homer and pile on the insults, and he sees his teammates wilt under the onslaught. The Monsters are tagged out, struck out, and worn out; now it’s 5-0 Aliens! Can Coach Roach’s pep talk turn this team around? Can Bonaparte deliver for his team without going to pieces?

Margery Cuyler has hit a home run with this book, and fans of all things monster, alien or baseball are sure to agree. I think you’ll enjoy Will Terry’s creative illustrations too (looking at you aliens!).

Scooby Apocalypse

Scooby Apocalypse Vol. 1 by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Howard Porter
Format: eBook
Who it’s for: Adults, Teens

It’s everyone’s favorite meddling kids, re-imagined for a new generation. Meet:

Daphne Blake, host of a low rated cable TV show investigating supernatural phenomenon.

Fred Jones, Daphne’s loyal camera man, who has carried a torch for her for years.

Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, dog trainer for a mysterious science lab called The Complex.

Scoobert “Scooby” Doo, prototype of a Complex experiment to create intelligent dogs to serve in the military.

And Dr. Velma Dinkley, top scientist at The Complex, and maybe the world’s only hope at stopping an experiment gone wrong that’s turning the human race into monsters.

This unlikely gang traverse the land in a literal Mystery Machine (What is the actual purpose of this armored van they escaped The Complex in?) trying to survive… The Scooby Apocalypse.

This dark reboot of the Scooby-Doo franchise is fun for new and legacy fans alike. It’s the end of the world as they know it, but you’ll feel fine, when you check out Scooby Apocalypse on Hoopla right now!

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi
Published: September 2019
Book
Who it’s for: Teens

Jam lives in a world where monsters no longer exist. The angels have made the world safe again by eradicating the monsters. School children learn of the angels and monsters, but people have done little to prevent their reemergence. When a horrific looking creature named Pet steps from Jam’s mother’s painting, Jam must come to grips with the fact that there is a monster in her best friend’s house. With the monster hunter Pet by her side, she must make some tough decisions to protect her friend.

This creative story teaches us that monsters aren’t always what they seem , and that merely telling the tales of angels isn’t enough to stop the wicked. Brave people like Jam must speak up and fight to reveal the wolves in sheep’s clothing that live among us.

Sawkill Girls

January 30, 2019 by Elisa Mattingly Leave a Comment

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
Format: Book
Who it’s For: Teens

“Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep. He’ll follow you home and won’t let you sleep…”

23 girls have disappeared from Sawkill Rock when Marion moves to the island with her mother and beautiful sister. 23 girls, and no one has any idea what happened to Zoey’s best friend Thora. 23 girls, and Val is hiding a nasty secret that could tear her apart from the inside out.

This young adult horror story follows three girls as they discover the terrifying secrets that are hidden on their island and if there is truth to Sawkill’s whispered ghost stories.

Sawkill Girls is a great book for those who want a dark, creepy read without the threat of nightmares afterward. Legrand merges the horror and fantasy genres seamlessly to create a story that is absolutely mesmerizing from beginning to end. The story twists from average high school drama, to a complete nightmare, and then back again in a mesmerizing way. She pushes you to the brink of terror and then pulls you back before it becomes too much to handle.

Marion, Zoey and Val are three imperfect, sometimes unlikable, characters that portray strength and ferocity in the face of loss and terror. The idea that strong female friendships can conquer even the most disturbing events is present throughout and creates a fierce girl power message that elevates the book from a good horror story to an inspiring and timely novel.
