Monsters

The Bath Monster

November 15, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

The Bath Monster by Colin Boyd. Jackson loved all things that made him dirty and messy: playing in mud, rolling down hills, and climbing trees. Every night, his mother would say, “Look at you! Go and have a bath now or the Bath Monster will come and get you.” Boys and girls everywhere are told about the Bath Monster’s second favorite food, dirty bath water. He waits at bottom of the drain with his special red and white straw to slurp up the dirty water. One night Jackson refuses to take a bath declaring he no longer believes in the bath monster. Everyone knows what the bath monster’s second favorite food is but that night Jackson finds out what his favorite food is! See this book listed in our catalog

My Teacher Is a Monster (No, I Am Not)

June 3, 2016 by Sara 2 Comments

My Teacher Is a Monster written and illustrated by Peter Brown. “Bobby has a problem. You see, his teacher is a monster.” It’s a really BIG problem for young Bobby, who thinks his very strict teacher is a big green monster. Remember the funny ideas we all had as kids about our teachers and how weird it could be meeting them outside of school? Well, Bobby and the monstrous Ms. Kirby have just such a chance encounter, which begins with awkward conversation on a park bench and ends with watching an epic paper airplane flight together from Bobby’s favorite spot in the park! You’ll enjoy watching the “transformation” happen as their interaction moves through a windy Saturday morning, with each of them coming to see the other in a whole new way. Monster Needs a Christmas Tree

December 24, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Brenda!

In Monster Needs a Christmas Tree by Paul Czajak, Monster sets out to get a Christmas tree. On the way to the tree lot, so many joyful things keep Monster from his mission. Sitting on Santa’s lap, sled riding, snowman building, with the inevitable snowball fight, and general snow merriment are hard to resist! Monster was having so much fun that when he finally got to the tree lot the last tree was being carried off by someone else. OH, NO! It was a long and sad walk home, but once he got inside, Monster had a brilliant idea! He gathered every houseplant he could find and he “built” a one-of-a-kind Christmas tree. Now, I wonder if Santa will leave Monster a present under his homemade tree. Take a fun-filled, rhyming romp with this book and find out! See this book listed in our catalog

The Problem with NOT Being Scared of Kids

The Problem with NOT Being Scared of Kids by Dan Richards. Some monsters are actually scared of kid, but others are not. This group of monsters would love to have a kid as a friend. How is a monster to become friends with a kid when being helpful is hazardous, sharing is startling, sleepovers end early, and claws mixed with crafts are a calamity? Even after trying everything to show the children how thoughtful they are they still just don’t fit in. The monsters are about to give up when all of a sudden someone comes along who changes everything. Now the monsters enjoy spending time with all their new friends! Buddy and the Bunnies in Don’t Play with Your Food

October 23, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tess!

Meet Buddy and the bunnies in Buddy and the Bunnies in Don’t Play with Your Food, an official Bob Shea story. Buddy is a scary monster! He wants to eat all the bunnies! He’s terrifying! But wait. The bunnies were just about to make cupcakes. Cupcakes? Maybe Buddy can wait to eat the bunnies and bake with them instead. The next day though he’s definitely going to eat them. But wait! The bunnies were just about to go swimming. Swimming? That sounds like fun. Buddy can’t eat the bunnies and then go swimming. He’d get a belly ache. But tomorrow those bunnies are getting eaten for sure. But wait! The bunnies are on their way to a carnival. Carnival? Buddy wants to go! And he would eat those bunnies if he didn’t get sick on the rides… When Buddy shows up the next day, he’s bound and determined to finally eat those bunnies. But wait! He’s had so much fun with those bunnies the past few days, and didn’t his mother always say never to play with your food? Maybe bunnies aren’t food after all. Maybe they’re friends! Spike the Mixed-up Monster

September 17, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Allana!

In Spike the Mixed-up Monster by Susan Hood Spike is no bigger than a lily pad. In fact, that’s where he spends most of the day: sitting on a lily pad, trying to look like a fierce, mean monster. But the other creatures who live around the pond think he is cute and adorable. El pato, el armadillo, and el campañol all agree he has a sweet smile! Spike feels like he is a horrible monster. A terrible monster! In other words, he is not good at being a monster. One day, el monstruo came by, and scared all the creatures away except for Spike! When Spike bared his teeth at el monstruo, the Gila Monster thought Spike was giving him a friendly smile, so he asked him for directions! This is a funny, entertaining, and expressive book for young school-aged children. It would also be suitable for a story time focusing on friendships and cooperation.
