Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie

July 24, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Brenda!

In Dexter Bexley and the Big Blue Beastie, by Joel Stewart, we meet a little boy named Dexter. As he’s riding along on his scooter one day, he scoots himself right into a big blue beastie! The big blue beastie says “I’m big and I’m bored. I should probably eat you up.” Dexter Bexley has to do some pretty quick thinking to keep from being eaten up! Dexter has the two of them scooting around, then scooting around while delivering flowers. They even become detectives and solve some pretty tough mysteries. After each adventure, the beastie grows bored again and is ready to eat Dexter up. Maybe feeding the big blue beastie the biggest, gooiest, tastiest yogurt feast of all time will keep him from wanting to eat Dexter up. No, it just wasn’t quite enough. When Dexter finally runs out of ideas, he sits down and tells the beastie that it may be time for the beastie to eat him up. Find out if the big blue beastie is ready to eat Dexter up, or if he’s no longer bored because he’s found a new friend… See this book listed in our catalog

Mommy’s Little Monster

March 5, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

Mommy’s Little Monster by Dawn McNiff. A little troll watches his mother as she prepares to leave for a party just for grown-ups. Mommy paints her claws, slimes her scales, and curls her bristles. She puts on her clodhoppers and pondweed cloak to go to the party. Tiny Troll knows she’s “the prettiest mommy ever.” When Mrs. Hag arrives to babysit, his tantrums set in. Mrs. Hag knows just what will make the crying go away: two mugs of mudmilk and his favorite storybook. When Mom returns home, she leans over the bed to kiss her little monster good night, and give him a bag of rotten worms. The little monster decides that grown-up parties aren’t so bad after all as he drifts off to sleep. See this book listed in our catalog

Frankenstein

November 8, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Jill!

Looking for a story that’s monstrously cute? “In a creepy old castle all covered with spines, lived twelve ugly monsters in two crooked lines,” begins Frainkenstein by Ludworst Bemonster. Little ghouls and boys everywhere will devour this spooky riff on the classic Madeline. Mad scientist Miss Devel (barely) manages a brood of young monsters ranging from a skeleton, a mummy, and a vampire, to a zombie and a werewolf, but the ugliest and scariest is Frankenstein, an adorable green little spook. When Frankenstein loses his head (literally), he’s whisked off by Dr. Bone to the laboratory, where chaos ensues. Fans of both Madeline and monsters will  delight in the many silly “scary” details, like the “CaldeNOT Horror Book” medal on the cover, and the spot-on old-fashioned style of the illustrations. Look for the picture of the mummy using his bandages as a swing, and the vampire’s coffin tucked into his bunk bed. On Halloween or anytime, Frankenstein kills. See this book listed in our catalog

Halloween Hustle

October 31, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Carol!

Halloween Hustle by Charlotte Gunnufson is a Halloween story about a skeleton who loves to dance. There is going to be a Halloween party hosted by Ghost on Halloween night and Skeleton is invited along with many other scary monsters. Skeleton is very excited because there will be a dance contest at the Halloween party. He begins practicing his dance moves doing the “Halloween Hustle” on his way to the party. While dancing, he trips on a crack, and his bones scatter everywhere. Luckily he is able to put himself back together with the help of some rubber bands. He continues on his way to the party with his monster friends, but along the way he falls apart again after tripping on a black cat. He finally reaches the party and does the Halloween Hustle, but he trips over Zombie’s foot and his bones scatter everywhere again! This time his skeleton friend is there to help him by gluing him back together for good with super strong glue. Now he can dance the night away and not have to worry about scattering his bones everywhere. See this book listed in our catalog

Monster Day at Work

August 21, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

In Monster Day at Work by Sarah Dyer, Little Monster and his dog Scamp accompany Dad to work. First on the list is picking out which tie to wear. After making it through the tough morning commute they settle in enjoying donuts and pastries at the morning meeting. Back in Dad’s office they work on the computer, Dad making graphs and Little Monster playing a video game. After lunch Monster helps by coloring in the charts Dad has spent all morning working on. Next on the list is a nap, Dad continues to work with one eye closed to get caught up. After visiting the pig shaped bank it’s off to the gym where dad runs on the treadmill and Little Monster plays on the slide. Little Monster can’t imagine how his father gets so tired every day when his job is so easy. He decides to spend the next day at home with his mother because she does nothing all day. The last page shows Monster Mum multitasking, frantically using all of her arms (growing a few new ones) and legs to get her work done while Little Monster sleeps in the laundry basket. Maybe he’s thinking about eating a bedtime snack? What if that snack he’s craving is you! Follow Monster as he rides his bicycle through a dark and terrible forest, crosses the gloopy, schloopy swamp, and tiptoes through thorns and thistles, getting closer and closer to your house. What if he’s decided you’ll taste delicious squished and then squashed onto HOT BUTTERED TOAST? He’s made it up the stairs, and he opens your bedroom door. Is he going to gobble you up? You’ll just have to read this book to find out what Monster does next! See this book listed in our catalog
