Mystery

Death Comes to Pemberley

April 30, 2020 by Carla Leave a Comment

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
Format: eBook, digital audiobook
Who it’s for: Teens, Adults

Have you read Pride and Prejudice? Pride and Prejudice is the foundation of Death Comes to Pemberley.

Six years have passed. Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy have two young sons. Jane and Charles Bingley have twin girls and a son. Darcy’s sister Georgiana has “reached her majority.” Two men want to court Georgiana. One is Fitzwilliam, Darcy’s military cousin. The other is a young lawyer, Henry Alveston.

The Darcys, Bingleys, Fitzwilliam, and Alveston have just finished dinner at Pemberley. Fitzwilliam departs on horseback for some fresh air. A carriage careens to a stop in front of Pemberley. Elizabeth’s sister, Lydia, bursts out of the carriage, wailing that her husband, Wickham, is dead in the Pemberley forest. Elizabeth draws her sister inside to console her. Fitzwilliam returns. He commandeers the male guests and some servants to form a search party.

In the forest, they encounter George Wickham in a clearing, leaning over the bloodied body of his military companion, Martin Denny. “I killed him!” cries Wickham. Fitzwilliam and Darcy carry Denny’s lifeless body out of the forest on a stretcher. Alveston and a servant accompany Wickham back to Pemberley.

Lydia, Wickham, and Denny had traveled together in the carriage to deliver Lydia to Pemberley as an unexpected guest. Wickham, unwelcomed at Pemberley, would travel on with Denny. At the edge of the forest, Denny cried, “I won’t do it!” He jumped out of the carriage and plunged into the forest. Wickham ran after him. Shortly thereafter, Lydia heard gun shots from deep in the forest.

Did Wickham commit murder? Was Fitzwilliam’s horseback ride suspicious? What wouldn’t Denny do? Who else may have killed Denny? Death Comes to Pemberley spins a murder mystery that is true to the characters of Jane Austen’s novels. For all who love the works of Jane Austen as well as mysteries, this is a worthwhile read.

The Wicked + The Divine

January 24, 2020 by Tess Leave a Comment

The Wicked + The Divine
Format: eBook, Book
Who it’s for: Adults

The Wicked + The Divine takes place in a world much like the one we are familiar with, but with a unique twist: Every ninety years, a phenomenon called the Recurrence takes place, and 12 deities – gods and goddesses – incarnate the bodies of young people, imbuing them with supernatural powers. For two years these members of the “Pantheon” use their powers to create superhuman art, inventions, and inspiration. They are loved and hated. Then they die. And it’s happening again.

It’s the 2010’s, and our gateway to the Pantheon is Laura, a “fangirl.” Laura adores the Pantheon and would do anything to be among them. She attends a deity’s performance, gets to meet some, befriends one, and is then swept up into a vast conspiracy involving the all the gods, the mysterious person who discovers/awakens them, and the truth behind the Recurrence and what causes it.

The Wicked + The Divine is a story about life and death. It’s a story about music and how it can speak to us and through us. It’s a story about the desire to create, and how consuming that drive can be. It’s a story about the cult of celebrity: how we worship them, or attempt to “cancel” them. (The Pantheon are the ultimate stars; they even bare resemblance to pop music icons to reinforce this idea.)

If you like mythology, music, and mystery, check out the graphic novel series The Wicked + The Divine, starting with Vol. 1 The Faust Act. We have the complete series at the library, and digitally via Hoopla. See it in our catalog.

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

November 12, 2019 by Elisa Mattingly Leave a Comment

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
Format: Book
Who it’s for: Adults

An isolated mansion in the hills of Scotland. An app that controls every lock and camera. A mysterious noise in the attic. And a nanny sitting in prison, explaining how she did not kill a little girl.

The Turn of the Key is the perfect mix of a Gothic ghost story, as it is based on Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw, and a cautionary tale of what happens when we let technology invade every aspect of our lives.

Rowan is a young woman moving to the Scottish Highlands to work as a nanny for three little girls. The pay is high, and the house is an amazing hybrid of Victorian architecture and modern style. The mansion is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that allows everything to be controlled through an app.

As Rowan tries to settle into her new role, she is disturbed by footsteps in the attic and whispers about ghosts scaring away the girls’ previous nannies.

Told through Rowan’s perspective as she recounts what happened after she arrived at the house, the novel’s twists and turns kept me guessing until the very last page.

I devoured this book in one day, because I just had to know what happened to land our protagonist in prison. This is easily my favorite Ruth Ware novel, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Twilight Zone Radio Dramas
Hoopla Audion
For Teens and Adults

Over the past month or so, I’ve been hooked on The Twilight Zone “Radio Dramas” a radio series featuring adaptations of actual episodes of the classic TV series The Twilight Zone.  The stories are often expanded and updated to reflect twenty-first century technology and society, but the scripts remain fairly close to the original television broadcast. All 29 volumes are available for instant download with Hoopla Digital.  These are indeed top-notch productions featuring voice performances from some notable celebrities. Its like listening to some old-time radio theater complete with the thrill and all the spooky feels.  If you’re into audio dramas, these might be worth a listen.

The Department of Sensitive Crimes

August 28, 2019 by Sara Leave a Comment

The Department of Sensitive Crimes by Alexander McCall Smith
Who it’s for: Adults
Format: Book, eBooks, Audiobook on CD, eAudio

Scandi-noir is big these days – Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, and Peter Hoeg are just a few of the authors known for this crime fiction genre set in any one of the Nordic countries. Scandi-noir is known for being dark, moody, and often grisly. Alexander McCall Smith’s newest series about a Swedish police department assigned to investigate crimes that are a bit too quirky for the rest of the police force is a bit of a different take on the genre. The series deals with crime in a Nordic country, but it lacks the bleakness typically associated with Scandi-noir. McCall Smith refers to it as “Scandi-blanc,” defined as “Scandinavian crime fiction without much crime and without any bodies.”

The cases the title team takes on are strange, but not so bleak and gory as typical Scandi-noir: a man stabbed in the back of the knee and the disappearance of an imaginary boyfriend are just the start. The complicated lives and relationships of Detective Ulf Varg and his team are also explored: Will Ulf and Anna admit their feelings for each other? Will Varg’s deaf dog Martin overcome his depression?

Fans of Alexander McCall Smith will enjoy his familiar writing style, while fans of Scandi-noir might just like this tongue-in-cheek play on the genre.
