When a Dragon Moves In Again

October 26, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Tammy!

When a Dragon Moves in Again by Jodi Moore. A young boy and his father build a castle, which in this case is actually a crib with castle detailing for the new baby. Soon after, a bright red dragon moves in joining the young boy in the castle until the rest of the family reminds them that the crib belongs to the new baby. As he adjusts to his new role, he experiences the ups and downs of being a big brother. After his dragon is charmed by the baby he decides he’s had enough of this baby business. When he goes to check on his dragon he finds the baby crying. After calming him decides he can stay after all! See this book listed in our catalog

Olive the Alien

Olive the Alien by Katie Saunders. Archie has a new baby sister named Olive. She is pink and frilly and looks a little like a marshmallow. Archie doesn’t understand his new sister and her behavior is confusing. He loves her but she speaks a language like boo ba de foo goo that sounds strange to him. She cries a lot and is loud. Maybe she is an alien from outer space! She does strange things and her meals were always messy. Whenever Mommy takes them out people always made funny faces at her. Archie begins to think she has strange powers that make normal people act strange around her. Mommy says Olive is not an alien from outer space and that she is just a baby. But Archie is not convinced. Finally Archie’s cousin William comes over with his baby brother. He acts a lot like Olive. William explains that that is how babies act and what babies always do. They speak the same strange language. They put everything in their mouth and cry loudly. Finally Archie tells Olive he is sorry. “You’re not and alien, you’re just a baby.” Until Olive makes a very terrible smell! It smells out of this world! Maybe he wasn’t wrong after all! Beastly Babies

June 6, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Beastly Babies by Ellen Jackson and illustrated by Brendan Wenzel. Babies can be messy and whine a lot. They wail and fuss and can be naughty. Sometimes they are smooth, and sometimes they are hairy. From whales to quails or dromedary (that’s an Arabian one humped camel) they are one or many! There are tiger babies that creep, pounce, and fail when they aim for mama’s tail. A jumbo sized elephant mom might drowse and doze, but her babies ram and slap which ruins her noontime nap. Baby rhinos will grow large and they practice how to ram. Momma mouse and bird gather grass and leaves to weave, and shred leaves to make a bed or nest. Then their little ones called kits, chicks, or pups wiggle around and mess it up. Puppies slobber, gorillas can’t sit still, while baby piglets wallow, and baby ducklings do not follow. They are making mischief and having fun. But beastly babies grow up by and by. And when they are all grown, they have beastly babies of their own. See this book listed in our catalog

What’s in Your Pocket?

February 16, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

What’s in Your Pocket by Ruth Symons and Laura Watkins. Josh loved to snuggle into his mom’s soft, warm pouch to sleep at night. When Josh grew bigger his mother told him to sleep on the grass like the older kangaroos. His mother had a surprise inside her pocket, “It’s tiny, but it will grow bigger. You can play with it, but not yet. It needs lots of love and care.” Josh couldn’t think of what it could be, so he went to ask his friends for help. After asking his friends, Katie the koala, Peter the parrot, and Terry the termite he returns home. When he returns home his mother reveals the surprise–a teeny tiny joey poked his head out of her pocket! Josh thought this was a very good surprise. See this book listed in our catalog

The Baby Tree

December 17, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

The Baby Tree by Sophie Blackall. Bring out your baby myths! A new baby is coming to his family and this soon-to-be big brother has a hundred questions. Most important of all is “Where are we going to get the baby?” Perplexed yet persistent, this curious youngster asks everyone he encounters throughout his busy day, but only ends up more confused. Baby Trees? Hospitals? STORKS?? Finally, at the end of the day as he is tucked in for bed, he asks Mom and Dad, who gently help him understand where babies really come from. It’s just the right amount of information for a little one, with extra age-appropriate information in the back of the book to help parents give their young children the answers they need. The pictures are full of sweet details and I especially loved the chubby swaddled babies sprinkled throughout! If you’ve got a new baby in your family or if your littles are asking Those Questions, you’ll like this story. See this book listed in our catalog

The Baby Swap

May 21, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

The Baby Swap by Jan Ormerod, pictures by Andrew Joyner. Mama crocodile thinks her new baby croc is just gorgeous.  “He is as green as grub and his eyes are as yellow as egg yolks.” His big sister Caroline does not agree. She is jealous. “He’s smelly,” she says. Caroline watches as Mama Crocodile enjoys all the cute croc things her new little brother does around the house. But she only sees the yucky stuff. “He is no fun and he dribbles,” she thinks. Caroline is very, very jealous! One day while Mama is out shopping with Caroline and her brother, Caroline is asked to watch her baby brother while Mama returns something. Caroline sees a Baby Shop nearby. She decides to swap her brother for a different kind of animal baby that would be better than her brother. Each baby she tries out turns out to be “no good.” She returns them and tries again. Find out what Caroline does with each baby and why she returns them. Will she get her baby brother back? And what will Mama Croc find when she gets back from her errand?
