Fiesta Babies
Submitted by Ms. Janis!
Fiesta Babies by Carmen Tafolla, a Pura Belpre Honor book, is surely a hit for toddlers and preschoolers. The short lines of text encourage participation in these age groups. “Fiesta Babies go out on the town—right-side up and upside down!” The “Fiesta Babies” are celebrating a local Hispanic holiday. They are wearing brightly colored clothes and handmade crowns (coronas). The Spanish words sprinkled throughout the book can be understood in context. These Fiesta Babies dance, march on parade, and sing along to mariachi songs in their spirited celebration of fiestas. Children are introduced to the many colorful aspects of an important and lively Latino cultural tradition. See this book listed in our catalog
Brand New Baby Blues
Submitted by Ms. Sue!
Brand-New Baby Blues by Kathi Appelt, illustrated by Kelly Murphy. The arrival of a new baby brother has this sister remembering the past, when it was only her. She tells her story of days gone by, when she was the only one, the cat’s pajamas, the moon and the sun. Now everything is different, and her whole life is rearranged. “Not now” is all mama answers, when her baby brother takes up all mama’s time. With her brand-new baby brother, she has the brand-new baby blues! This story in rhyme is cute and familiar to anyone with siblings, and could be sung to your child in a bluesy tune for fun. The full page illustrations utilize soft shades, further enhancing the quality of this book. See this book listed in our catalog
Sophie Peterman Tells the Truth!
Submitted by special guest blogger Ms. Judie from the Charlotte Hall branch!
Sophie Peterman Tells the Truth by Sarah Weeks. Sophie Peterman is a beacon of truth in the picture book world. She lays it all on the line, and gives us the skinny on baby brothers. And the skinny is not pretty: baby brothers smell bad, they mess up your stuff, they look like aliens, and they SOMEHOW manage to convince the grown-ups that they’re cute. As an older sibling myself, I know from experience that everything Sophie tells us is true, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Sophie learns how important she is to her baby brother and starts to see how maybe having him around could be okay. This book will be hilariously familiar to anyone who has had to endure a baby brother (or sister) and somehow learned to like it. See this book listed in our catalog
Jazz Baby
Submitted by Tammy, driver of the WoW van!
Jazz Baby by Lisa Wheeler is a rhythmic, short story about a baby and his extended family making jazzy music. In this amazing book you’ll find all the sounds you would hear in a jazz song: rat-tat-tat, snazzy jazzy, doo wop doo, etc. Readers will find themselves getting involved in the story as they start to clap and tap along to the rhythmic nature of the book. The beautiful illustrations cover the pages with long shots of buildings swaying to the beat, and music notes that dance around “Baby.” As the story winds to an end, the family members start to disappear, until a sleepy baby is left with his parents, and soon falls fast asleep. Bedtime in the Jungle
Submitted by Tammy, driver of the WoW van!
Bedtime in the Jungle by John Butler. The sun is starting to set in the jungle as bedtime approaches for the baby animals. The daylight in the background gradually disappears on each page as the moon gently rises and the stars appear in the night sky. Children will be delighted as the animal mothers gather their babies close to settle them for the night. Using soft words of comfort inspired by the song “Over in the Meadow” each mother encourages her little one(s) to go to sleep. All of the animals are depicted in their natural settings, in soothing shades that are sure to calm young children and encourage them to sleep. See this book listed in our catalog
