Little Pink Pup
Submitted by Ms. Catherine!
Sometimes, when you are different from the rest of your family members, you can feel out of place. In Little Pink Pup by Johanna Kerby we meet Pink, a premature piglet who just didn’t fit in with his pig family. His brothers and sisters were simply too big, and Pink could never get enough food. But while Pink didn’t fit with his piglet brothers and sisters, he was the perfect size to move into the house. Tink the family dog had just had a litter of pups and welcomed a foster pig too! Pink fit right in with his new dachshund brothers and sisters. The puppies were just the right size for him to play with. And, while he didn’t look anything like his new siblings, no one minded in the least! Eventually, Pink moved back out to the barn with the other pigs, but his doggie friends still come to visit and play. Pink’s story is true, and Little Pink Pup is filled with photographs of Pink and his family as they eat, sleep, grow, and play together. This is a wonderful book for any child who loves animals and wants to see real pictures of piglets and puppies. It can also be a nice story for any child who is feeling out of place, and needs a reminder that no matter how different you are there is always a place in the family for you. There’s a Cow in the Road
Submitted by Ms. Amanda!
There’s A Cow in the Road by Reeve Lindbergh is a great book, that is written in rhyme, all about a child’s morning routine, with a twist. When the narrator wakes up in the morning to get ready for school, she sees a cow in the road. Then a goat joins the cow! As the narrator continues to get ready, a huge group of animals gather in the road in front of her house. Before she knows it there is a cow, goat, sheep, horse, goose and a pig in the road! Finally, she joins the crowd in the road in front of her house. The crowd is standing there waiting in the road in front of her house… What are they waiting for? They are waiting so they won’t be late, the school bus comes at a quarter to eight! What a cute way to read about time and sequence with children. Each animal shows up at a different time and step in the narrator’s morning routine. The story flows nicely, since it is written in short rhyming sentences. I have loved this story for years and hope you will too! See this book listed in our catalog

Little Mouse Gets Ready
Submitted by Ms. Tess!
Little Mouse Gets Ready by Jeff Smith (of Bone and RASL fame) is a great introduction to the comic book format for your child. Little Mouse has just been informed he’s going to the barn and needs to “get ready,” so he decides to put his clothes on. We’re taken through the step-by-step process of putting on one’s clothes, including the universal struggle with buttons, punctuated by speculation of the fun things to be done in the barn. Finally, Little Mouse is fully dressed and ready to go, when Mama Mouse reminds him that mice don’t wear clothes. What a twist! The art is sweet, filled with friendly autumn pastels, and the whole book is infused with humour and charm. It’s a truly memorable story about a routine that your child can relate to.
