Paranormal

The Dead and the Dark

March 16, 2022 by Andie Leave a Comment

The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould
Format: Book
Who it’s for: Teens

The Dead and the Dark alternates perspectives between Logan, the daughter of popular T.V. ghost hunters, the ParaSpectors, and Ashley, a small-town girl whose boyfriend just went missing, as they try to figure out what is plaguing the town of Snakebite, Oregon. Missing teenagers, ghosts, family secrets, and more keep this book entertaining from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this book, it was completely captivating! The way that Gould writes makes the characters feel realistic, and the book overall just hard to put down. The twists and turns of the mystery keep readers guessing and curious until the end. I highly recommend this book if you’re in the mood for a small-town paranormal mystery!

Bigfoot and the Librarian

January 10, 2022 by Tess Leave a Comment

Bigfoot and the Librarian by Linda Winstead Jones
Format: Digital Audiobook
Who it’s for: Adults

Marnie Somerset needs a fresh start; a new beginning, away from her dysfunctional family, and a worrying string of unsuitable ex-lovers. She accepts the position of Librarian for a charming little town she’s never heard of before: Mystic Springs, Alabama. Upon arriving, she finds the long-time citizens, who call themselves “Springers,” are a bit… stand-off-ish. Well, she supposes that’s to be expected. After all, Mystic Springs is a very small town, with a very insular community. At least the local author, Clint Maxwell, is helpful, and not hard on the eyes!

Clint knows the truth: Mystic Springs isn’t an ordinary town, and the people who’ve lived there for generations aren’t ordinary people. There is magic in Mystic Springs; witches, werewolves, fairies, fortune-tellers, and more. Clint himself is a shape-shifter who turns into Bigfoot whenever the mood strikes him! And Springers don’t take kindly to strangers. This Librarian is an outsider! It could be dangerous for her to stay, and much better for everyone if she left… too bad he can’t stop thinking about her!

This cute paranormal romance about a small southern town is the first in the Mystic Springs series by Linda Winstead Jones, and is available to listen to via Hoopla.

This first book in a new series doesn’t disappoint! It has all the great elements of a fun and fast paced read. There is mystery, suspense, paranormal elements, action, and a hot romance.

For two women who can read auras and sense events past and present, let’s just say the investigation business is going well.

Their lives are quickly upended when Olivia goes missing; and an interesting man named Slater shows up from The Foundation, a secretive supernatural organization. Twilight Zone Radio Dramas
Hoopla Audion
For Teens and Adults

Over the past month or so, I’ve been hooked on The Twilight Zone “Radio Dramas” a radio series featuring adaptations of actual episodes of the classic TV series The Twilight Zone.  The stories are often expanded and updated to reflect twenty-first century technology and society, but the scripts remain fairly close to the original television broadcast. All 29 volumes are available for instant download with Hoopla Digital.  These are indeed top-notch productions featuring voice performances from some notable celebrities. Its like listening to some old-time radio theater complete with the thrill and all the spooky feels.  If you’re into audio dramas, these might be worth a listen.

Find yourself in The Twilight Zone on Hoopla Digital.

The Rules of Magic

June 6, 2018 by Josie Leave a Comment

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
Format: Book, Audiobook, eBook, & Digital Audiobook
Who it’s for: Adults

To protect Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens from their family’s curse, their lives have been lived in accordance to a list of strict rules: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic, and most importantly, no falling in love. However, this all changes when the Owens trio pays a visit to their Aunt Isabelle, who decidedly rejects all notions of curses determining one’s fate. Between reading magical texts, formulating hexes, brewing up potent teas, and hand-making batches of “cure-all black soap”, the siblings learn an entirely new set of rules to live (and to love) by. Firstly, do as you will, but harm no one. Secondly, what you give will be returned to you in threefold. And lastly, fall in love whenever you can.

Written in a series of distinguished parts, the story is driven forward by each of the sibling’s interpretation of these rules and their evolving understanding of their true identities. Hoffman’s prequel to her widely popular novel, Practical Magic, explores the importance of autonomy and the complexity of legacy.
