Seasons

Pup and Bear

January 23, 2018 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Sue!

Pup and Bear by Kate Banks, illustrated by Naoko Stoop. The Arctic is a big place. The Arctic wolves know that the Big Freeze is on its way. They shelter in a snowdrift. When the bitter-cold turns warm and the Big Melt begins, one lone little wolf pup finds himself afloat on a sheet of ice. He slides into the water and swims and swims until he finally reaches land. He pulls himself onto a snowbank and falls asleep. When he wakes he is face to face with Polar bear. “Will you eat me?” he asks. “Not this bear.” She takes him to her den where she licks him, cleans him, feeds, and keeps him warm. “I am not your mother but I can keep you safe.” Another Big Freeze comes and goes. The bear nudges the wolf who is not a pup anymore. The wolf nuzzles back. Then the wolf sets out into the big wide world. The wolf finds other wolves. Soon he is leading his own pack when he comes across a polar bear cub huddled in a snowdrift. “Where is your mother?” But the cub didn’t know. The wolf sniffs the cub and rubs its fur with a wet nose. “I am not your mother,” said the wolf, “but I can cuddle you and keep you warm.” See this book listed in our catalog

Otters Love to Play

Otters Love to Play by Jonathan London, illustrated by Meilo So, takes you through the life cycle of the playful otter. A book that is filled to the brim with knowledge and facts is also filled with beautiful illustrations and fun text. Otters make use of left behind beaver lodges to make homes for themselves. There, otter pups are born and begin their journey through life. Otters are just like kids and love to play tag and wrestle. Once otter pups have their furry coats, swim lessons begin. Swimming is essential for otters and that’s why they start quite young. Soon the pups become underwater acrobats! As the otter pups progress, so do the seasons. This book not only illustrates otters beautifully but also the changing of seasons. As winter approaches, otter pups have fun in the snow just like you! Otters don’t hibernate and get to enjoy all four seasons. An otter’s day is full of play and so should yours! See this book listed in our catalog

Bear Is Not Tired

June 15, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Brenda!

Bear Is Not Tired by Ciara Gavin. Bear and the ducks live happily together. Because they are such a happy family, Bear often forget that he isn’t actually a duck. When winter weather starts chilling the air, Bear knows that soon it will be time for him to go to sleep, but he doesn’t want to go to sleep. He doesn’t want to miss out on all the fun the ducks will be having without him, so he decides to stay awake! His plan doesn’t work too well. Even though the ducks try to help him stay awake, Bear often falls asleep at very inconvenient times. Not until Mama Duck assures him that he won’t miss a thing, does Bear decide to give in and go to sleep. The ducks go about their daily business, including Bear whenever they can. One spring morning, Bear wake up! True to her word, Mama Duck has made a photo album to share with Bear when he woke up. Bear hadn’t missed a thing. His family made sure to include him, and he had the pictures to prove it! With illustrations that are soft, and full of expression, this is a perfect book for snuggling up with before taking a nice, long nap. See this book listed in our catalog

The Thing About Yetis

February 19, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Cassie!

The Thing About Yetis by Vin Vogel. Have you ever wondered how Yetis survive those long, cold winters? Well, it helps that Yetis love winter. But do they ever get tired of all that snow? And what about summer? Do they like summer? Vogel tells us exactly how Yetis deal with the dark and chilly winter months. From hot cocoa to snow castles, Yetis make the most of the snow. And when the Yeti gets cold (after all, everyone gets cold in the snow), he comes up with a good plan for warming up. It might give you and your little ones some good ideas for braving the winter! February 12, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Brenda!

Grandma is not like other grandmas. She doesn’t bake cookies, she wears Grandpa’s old flannel shirt, and she wears oversized boots for muddy walks in the woods. When Grandma grabs her walking stick, the “North Woods Girl” runs to catch up with her. North Woods Girl by Aimee Bissonette, is about a little girl who goes on forest adventures with her grandma. In the spring, they trudge through the mud and use binoculars to spot wildlife. In summer, they grow vegetables and can them to share with friends. In winter, the cold doesn’t stop them from taking long walks through the woods. Grandma says she isn’t a good looking woman, but to her granddaughter, she’s perfect the way she is. Winter Is Coming

November 28, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Sue!

Winter Is Coming by Tony Johnson, illustrated by Jim LaMarche. A girl with her sketch book walks through the woods throughout the seasons of fall to winter. She quietly observes many of the forest animals as they begin to prepare for winter. In September, fall is on its way, but winter is coming and you can feel it. She is quiet, quiet as a red fox comes near. He sniffs a red apple. Wrinkled or not it is food. From her perch on an old wooden plank placed high in a tree, the girl can see many of the animals as they forage for food. Skunks waddle by. They smell not really bad but real. It is October and she sees woodpeckers hammering their holes and plugging them with acorns. Animals do not waste. November is here and chipmunks are chattering and busy eating seeds from pinecones. Deer come near nibbling, looking for food. Winter is coming. Canadian geese honk overhead and a flock of turkeys jostle by. She is quiet, quiet and then the snow is dusting her. It is late November and winter is here. See this book listed in our catalog
