The Happy Hippopotami

February 27, 2017 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Karen!

Who loves a sunny day at the beach? Hippos do! The Happy Hippopotami by the ever-popular Bill Martin, Jr., is one of my favorite stories, about a multi- generational bus trip to the beach. From happy hippopotapooses toddling across the sand, to happy hipppopatapoppas with dimes in hand for boardwalk treats, these beach-loving hippos find all kinds of fun at the shore. Hippos are everywhere, sunning, dancing, making music, competing in events, riding the carnival rides and seeing the shows, till the sun goes down and the tired hippos board the bus for home. The rhymes are creative and delightful and the hippos are beautiful in soft bright watercolor. It’s a ton of fun at the beach! See this book listed in our catalog

In a Cloud of Dust

November 1, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

In a Cloud of Dust written by Alma Fullerton, illustrated by Brian Deines. In a remote Tanzanian village a school gets a special visitor: the Bicycle Library truck! The children choose bicycles, except Anna, who is inside completing her homework. Anna lives so far from the school that it is too dark for school work when she gets home. By the time Anna gets outside, all the bikes have been checked out by others. Anna is disappointed, but chooses to help and cheer on her friends as they practice. In the end Anna’s kindness is rewarded when one of her friends helps her to get home on his bike! A very accessible tale of a simple idea that is changing the lives of many children around the world. Be sure to read the author’s note at the end for a deeper explanation of the importance of bicycles in third world countries. There is also a list of non-profit groups providing bicycles globally to folks at no cost. Perhaps your family would like to help out too! See this book listed in our catalog

The Airport Book

June 14, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Mr. Eric!

The airport is an interesting place. People are coming and going from all over the world, often dressed or looking much different from what we’re used to. While they may look strange to us, we probably look strange to them. There are so many cool things to see, from the planes constantly taking off and landing, to the strange, mysterious pieces of luggage people push as they hurry to their flight. People hug, some cry as they say their goodbyes, and you can’t help to watch, soaking in this tiny snapshot of their life. Although while at the airport you spend most of your time either in line or waiting to be in line, if you enjoy people watching you will never truly be bored. The Airport Book, written and illustrated by Lisa Brown, is a book written for fans of people watching. Although the plot follows a single family as they travel to visit relatives, the observant reader will spot a multitude of stories hidden in plain sight behind the main characters. Who is the man with the huge cowboy hat going to visit? What is inside the small man’s strangely shaped package that is marked “fragile?” Did the husband truly remember his airline tickets, even after being repeatedly reminded by his wife? Just as watching people at the airport affords us only a tiny glimpse into the lives of others, the book provides us with many, many hidden stories that are as interesting as they are brief, and is sure to be interesting for readers of every age, especially those who are about to go on a trip! The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk

March 15, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms Jill!

The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk by Kabir Sehgal and Surishtha Seghal, illustrated by Jess Golden. You probably know all the words to “The Wheels on the Bus” by heart, but what about the wheels on the Tuk Tuk? In big cities in India, tuk tuks (pronounced “Took Took”), also called motor rickshaws, are a common way to get around. This story in song follows one tuk tuk on its route. All sorts of people hop on and off, paying their fares with rupee coins as the three-wheeled vehicle zips up and down crowded streets, through markets full of vegetables, and past food shops selling tea and treats. The tuk-tuk-walla (the driver) makes his way carefully around cows sleeping in the road, dodges an elephant, and sees the festival fireworks of the Diwali holiday before finally parking his tuk tuk at home for the night. The bright, cartoonish illustrations are filled with details of life in a busy Indian city, and a glossary defines unfamiliar words. See this book listed in our catalog
