Small Medium & Large

Small Medium & Large by Jane Monroe Donovan. A little girl who has just moved into a new house writes a letter to Santa. She doesn’t ask Santa for new toys, but something more special. On Christmas morning she goes downstairs to find 3 boxes, each one a different size: one small, one medium, and one large. She opens the small box to find a cat, the medium a dog, and the large box contains a miniature horse! They head outside for a day of fun in the snow: sledding, making snow men and snow angels, and a snowball fight! After having fun they head indoors to bake fish and horseshoe shaped cookies, sit by the warm fire, and then snuggle into bed after writing a thank you letter to Santa. This almost wordless picture book is perfect for sharing with children one on one, or in a small group. See this book listed in our catalog

Daisy Gets Lost

January 14, 2014 by Sara Leave a Comment

In 2012, Chris Raschka won the Caldecott medal for his book A Ball for Daisy. Raschka gives us another delightful book about the wonderful dog Daisy in Daisy Gets Lost.  In this nearly wordless book, Daisy and her owner play in the park with Daisy’s beloved ball. But when a squirrel leads Daisy on a merry chase, she finds herself quite lost in a dark and scary forest. Luckily, Daisy’s owner isn’t too far away, and with a loud “awoooooooooo” howl, everyone is reunited and safe at the end. Raschka manages to tell an exciting story with hardly any words throughout the entire book. His illustrations are warm and full of life, and will be engaging to parents and children alike. Inside Outside

October 23, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Melissa!

Inside Outside is a wordless picture book by Lizi Boyd  In this book, you will journey with a boy, his dog, and occasionally his cat, inside their home and then outside. Each page features a cut out displaying something from the next scene. A bird on a snowman’s arm becomes a piece of art work hung on the refrigerator. This creative method helps children infer and predict facts about the story. Each detailed page tells many stories so that each time you open the book a different adventure awaits you. Wordless picture books are an important early literacy tool. Reading is more than just decoding the words on the page; it’s also about understanding the pictures and comprehending the relationship between the two. Those who struggle with letter recognition often feel defeated when seeing words on a page, but with a wordless picture book they will be drawn into an imaginative world where they can successfully read the story. This book gives the guardian many opportunities to ask questions. This may be a fun way to discover your child’s imagination; you never know how they might answer. Hank Finds an Egg

Hank Finds an Egg by Rebecca Dudley is a charming and beautifully photographed wordless book. Hank is walking through the forest when he discovers an egg on the ground. He quickly realizes that it came from a nest above, so he attempts to return it. He can’t quite figure it out, because the nest is up quite high, and try as he might he just can’t reach! At the end of the day, he camps out nearby with the egg close to him, keeping it warm. With the dawn of a new day will Hank be able to figure out his problem? Perhaps, with the help of another creature who happens to live nearby! Put your own words and expression to this adorable, sweet story, and your little ones will marvel at the pictures in this book! Bear Despair and I Want My Hat Back

February 11, 2013 by Sara Leave a Comment

An important lesson I am sure you want to impart upon the children in your life that you care for is how to not get eaten by a bear. As respected news journalist Stephen Colbert has pointed out many a time, bears are the number one threat to national security. Luckily I have two books for you and your child that will help you avoid ending up the lunch of a hungry bear.

Bear Despair by Gaëtan Dorémus teaches us that a sure fire way to get yourself eaten by a bear, is to steal that bear’s teddy bear. In this wordless story we watch, with horror, as a fox makes this mistake, purloining a stuffed animal from a slumbering bear. The bear retaliates. Unfortunately, Lion, Bird, and Elephant do not learn from Fox’s mistake, and also end up in Bear’s belly. What will become of them? You’ll have to experience Bear Despair for yourself to find out! This book will especially delight fans of The Chicken Thief and other books in Enchanted Lion Books’ “Stories Without Words” series. See this book listed in our catalog

Another helpful cautionary tale is I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. In this story a bear is looking for his hat. He asks his various fellow forest dwellers if any of them has seen it. Fox says, “No. I haven’t seen your hat.” Frog says, “I have not seen any hats around here.” Turtle says, “I haven’t seen anything all day.” Rabbit, who is conspicuously wearing a hat says, “Why are you asking me. I haven’t seen it. I haven’t seen any hats anywhere. I would not steal a hat. Don’t ask me any more questions.” Hmm… Bear questions other animals until he realizes: He has seen his hat. As we’ve learned, it is a bad idea to steal from a bear, but it’s also a bad idea to lie about it. What happens to Rabbit? If you’re dying to know, check out I Want My Hat Back today. This book was a Blue Crab Award winner, and a Geisel Honor book, so it is especially great for kids who are learning to read! See this book listed in our catalog
