Instructions for Dancing

February 4, 2022 by Morgi Leave a Comment

Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
Format: Book
Who it’s for: Teens

This was a cute, quick, and bittersweet read. Evie loved reading romance books, but that’s all in the past now that her parents are divorced. She no longer believes in love. One day she gets the ability to see people’s love stories once she sees them kiss and how all relationships all eventually end. In her quest to find answers she ends up at a dance studio and partnering with a boy named X.

Evie is more cautious, while X is much more free-spirited. They had lots of cute moments together as they got to know each other from dance practice and hanging out. I loved their opposite personalities and how they worked so well together.

The ending caught me off guard the most, but I’m not mad at it. Just bittersweet. Check out Instructions for Dancing in our catalog.

The Project

May 7, 2021 by Tess Leave a Comment

The Project by Courtney Summers
Format: Book, eBook
Who it’s for: Teens, Adults

Years ago, Lo’s sister Bea joined “The Unity Project.” The Project, as it’s casually known, is NOT A CULT according to its charismatic leader, Lev Warren, and his followers. They are a service organization, with centers for enrichment dotting the American north east. Warren gives a public sermon once a year, and has been known to predict world events, leading the faithful to believe the access to a higher power he claims to have is real. But Lo isn’t buying it.

When an opportunity arises for her to investigate The Project, she’s determined to unmask Warren as the charlatan she’s sure he is, and free her sister from his manipulations. But when she’s embraced by him and his movement, her doubt falters, and her defenses begin to crack. Does Warren actually perform miracles? Does The Project truly offer redemption? Or is it all just a dangerous façade?

The story is told through chapters alternating between the sisters, which can be jarring at first, but pays off, as it sets up a suspenseful and satisfying narrative journey, with twists and turns you won’t expect. The book features scenes of abuse, which may be troubling to some. Courtney Summers also wrote the Edgar and Audie award winning 2018 novel Sadie. Both books are at times unpleasant, but totally worthwhile explorations of family, truth, and identity.

The Power of the Dark Crystal

November 18, 2019 by Tess Leave a Comment

The Power of the Dark Crystal
Format: eBook, Book
Who it’s for: Teens, Adults

If you’re a fan of the classic Jim Henson film The Dark Crystal and/or the Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance you will be pleased to know the story of The Dark Crystal does not end (or begin*) there.

The Power of the Dark Crystal graphic novels are a sequel to the film. Jen and Kira have ruled the mystical world of Thra for a great many trine [off and on] but their hard-earned peace lies in jeopardy when the fireling Thurma, arrives from a subterranean world and threatens to crack the Crystal of Truth and release the evil Skeksis upon the land once more. Thurma has only one ally, the gelfling Kensho, who trusts that together they can save both their worlds from destruction. Much like the original film, this series is a story about love, overcoming obstacles, and the importance of environmental stewardship.

If you enjoy The Power of the Dark Crystal, Kensho and Thurma’s saga continues in the graphic novel series Beneath the Dark Crystal.

And if you really can’t get enough of The Dark Crystal you might try J.M. Lee’s YA series of novels about Thra, starting with Shadows of the Dark Crystal, which features several characters from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and seems to take place concurrent with the TV show.

*There is also The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths shedding light on how the world of Thra began. Witness the birth of Aughra, and her son Raunip, the arrival of the urSkeks, as well as the Great Division, among other “historical” events.

See everything The Dark Crystal in our catalog.

The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles)

July 6, 2018 by Tess Leave a Comment

The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding
Format: Book
Who’s it For: Teens

If you’d like to start your Summer Reading off right with a light hearted summer romance, look no further than The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding. Abby Ives is all set to have a fantastic summer. Thanks to her hard work on her plus size style blog, she’s landed an internship at her favorite retro-inspired fashion boutique, handling their social media for the summer. She’s really excited because the internship usually leads to part time job in the fall! But this year the boutique has hired two interns! Abby will have to compete for that job against the other intern: a mysterious young woman named Jordi Perez. Jordi’s specialty is photography, and her photos are so sophisticated, and Jordi is so mature, Abby is sure that Jordi will get the job. Abby can’t stop thinking about Jordi, and soon it’s not just because of the competition… Abby’s pretty sure she’s falling in love with the artsy and enigmatic Jordi Perez!

In addition to being a fun and heartwarming romance, this book has great messages about body positivity, family relationships, friendships and how they change, not judging people based on first impressions, and I haven’t even mentioned the cheeseburgers! (There are a lot of cheeseburgers in this book!) Find it in our catalog
