Flying High by Jorgen Stamp. Walter is a giraffe who wishes he could fly. He gets a book, and begins to build an airplane for himself. Sonny, the turtle, is his friend. He asks if he can also go flying. Walter tells his friend he’s too slow and cowardly, and hurts his feelings. The big day finally arrives, and Walter takes off in his airplane. He loves swooping and sweeping up in the sky with the birds. He ignores repeated warnings that a storm is approaching, and suddenly finds himself in the middle of a thunderstorm! His plane is hit by lightning and crashes into the lake. Sonny swims out and rescues him. The next day he builds another plane, only this time it has two seats, one for him and one for his best friend, Sonny. A good story about true friendship! See this book listed in our catalog

Pouch!
Submitted by Catherine from Charlotte Hall!
In Pouch by David Ezra Stein, we meet little Joey–a brand new baby Kangaroo! Joey is so excited to explore his new world, but whenever something scares him, he goes running back to mom yelling “Pouch!” and dives into the safe warm pocket. But with every trip back, Joey becomes a bit more brave, until he realizes that maybe this world isn’t so scary after all. This would be a wonderful book to read aloud, especially to a child who is just starting to learn their numbers. Each time Joey ventures out he adds one more hop to his trip. Kids will also love yelling “Pouch!” along with Joey as he goes running home. This simple story about overcoming fears and making friends would be a wonderful addition to any story time with you and your child. See this book listed in our catalog
A Turkey for Thanksgiving
Submitted by Carol from Charlotte Hall!
A Turkey for Thanksgiving written by Eve Bunting, and illustrated by Diane de Groat, is a cute story about a Moose family who wants a turkey for Thanksgiving. The Moose family is very excited for the Thanksgiving holiday and they are so happy to have friends joining them. Everything is wonderful, except one thing: Mrs. Moose wants so badly to have a turkey for Thanksgiving this year! Everyone always has a turkey–everyone except them. So Mr. Moose and his friends set out to get a turkey for Thanksgiving. Finally they find Turkey. Turkey, of course, is quite frightened, and he tries hard to get away, but he is caught, and brought home for Thanksgiving dinner. However, to his great surprise and delight, he is a guest at the Moose family table, and not the main course! This is a great story about friendship and love during the Thanksgiving holiday. Otis
Submitted by Tess from Lexington Park!
I’ve fallen in love with Loren Long’s Otis, the tale of a little tractor that could! Otis the tractor loves his farm. He loves to work! And he especially loves the calf that sleeps in the barn with him. They are best friends! They do everything together, until one day the farmer brings home a bright, shiny, brand new tractor, and Otis is put out to pasture. One day, when the farmer is about to enter her in a baby cow beauty contest, the calf gets stuck in the mud and no one can get her out! No one, that is, of course, except for Otis. Finally the friends are reunited! This story might not make the most sense, but it’s full of rich, emotive illustrations that I just can’t get enough of. Hopefully you and your child will love Otis too! See this book listed in our catalog

Let’s Do Nothing
Submitted by Catherine from Charlotte Hall!
Ever been so tired that you don’t want to do anything? In fact, you just want to do nothing! In Tony Fucile’s Let’s Do Nothing! two little boys are so tired from games, sports, baking, coloring, and every other thing they can think of, they decide to just do nothing. While the one, Sal, is able to relax enough to enjoy the prospect of doing nothing, his friend Frankie is less settled. Trying to imagine himself a statue in central park leads to shooing pigeons, and being a tree in the forest makes for a wet situation with a puppy. In the end, the boys decide that maybe doing something is just a bit more fun, especially with a friend. See this book listed in our catalog
