Diana’s White House Garden

July 18, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Submitted by Ms. Sue!

Diana’s White House Garden by Elisa Carbone and illustrated by Jen Hill. Diana who is ten years old lives in the “white house.” Her dad Harry Hopkins was the president’s chief adviser in 1943. She lived there with lots of other people that worked there including President Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. President Roosevelt wanted every citizen to help with the war effort. When he asked that everyone plant a garden to grow food for our soldiers, Diana wanted to help too. The gardens were called “Victory Gardens.” Diana worked with George the grounds keeper to turn the soil, fertilize, and plant the seeds. She went every day before and after school to tend the garden. When the plants were almost grown reporters came to see it. They asked Diana “how does it feel to inspire the whole country and help with the war effort?” “It feels very good,” she said. An article went out a few days later and the headline read “Diana Farms Her White House Plot”. It explained how the president’s plan was working and how she was an important part! My Garden

In My Garden by Kevin Henkes a little girl and her mother work in the garden. As they are working the little girl starts to imagine what it would be like if she had her very own garden. In her garden things would be quite different. Inside this little girl’s imagination we see a very unusual garden where flowers keep blooming and never die. We see flowers that change color and grow right back when pulled. In her garden the rabbits would be chocolate and seashells would grow. She could plant jelly beans and grow a jelly bean tree. She would also grow tomatoes the size of beach balls and invisible carrots because she doesn’t like carrots. Her garden sounds absolutely amazing! When she is done dreaming about her garden she plants a seashell. After all, you never know what might happen… See this book listed in our catalog

Pond Circle

March 3, 2016 by Sara Leave a Comment

Pond Circle, written by Betsy Franco and illustrated by the amazing Stefano Vitale is a beautiful tale about a pond and its inhabitants through a late summer afternoon till night. This rhythmic story builds on itself with each character introduced (think “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” only more beautiful). It begins with the water in the pond itself, then the algae, insects, reptiles, animals, and birds, moving through an accurately represented food chain to the little girl who lives by the pond. The pictures, you ask? StefanoVitale is my new favorite illustrator! Vitale’s luminous illustrations, gorgeously done on wood board with paint/color wash, brings this story magically to life. The pictures are large and lush, great for lap time or group reading. As a bonus, there are lots of fun facts at the end about each creature we’ve met, making it a must-read for all animal lovers and budding scientists out there. If you, like me, are a sucker for a great picture book, you won’t be disappointed in Pond Circle. (Did I mention it is beautiful?) See this book listed in our catalog

North Woods Girl

Grandma is not like other grandmas. She doesn’t bake cookies, she wears Grandpa’s old flannel shirt, and she wears oversized boots for muddy walks in the woods. When Grandma grabs her walking stick, the “North Woods Girl” runs to catch up with her. North Woods Girl by Aimee Bissonette, is about a little girl who goes on forest adventures with her grandma. In the spring, they trudge through the mud and use binoculars to spot wildlife. In summer, they grow vegetables and can them to share with friends. In winter, the cold doesn’t stop them from taking long walks through the woods. Grandma says she isn’t a good looking woman, but to her granddaughter, she’s perfect the way she is. B is for Bear

B is for Bear: A Natural Alphabet by Hannah Viano is not just another alphabet book. In this book the author and illustrator combines elements from animals, the weather, plants, and humans to create a walk among the alphabet. She writes, “I i ICEBURG, most icebergs only show part of their total size: another 90 percent is hidden underneath the water.” Or “C c CLOUD, a cloud is made of water droplets suspended in air.” In this alphabet book the illustrations are created by cutting away black paper to reveal the shape of the image. The author was inspired by running a little wild through forests and mountains with her son in the Pacific Northwest. My favorite part of this book is when she asks “what is another creature that belongs outdoors? Kids! So kids go outside and explore.” See this book listed in our catalog

If You Love Honey: Nature’s Connections

December 16, 2015 by Sara Leave a Comment

If You Love Honey: Nature’s Connections by Martha Sullivan and illustrated by Cathy Morrison. Bees are known for collecting pollen and spreading it so flowers will grow. But did you know that dandelions hold nectar for bees and butterflies? Ladybugs eat bugs that hurt the plants and Goldenrod gives ladybugs a home too. Butterflies spread pollen so flowers will grow and Clover is a favorite place for butterflies to lay their eggs and give caterpillars a home. After eating a lot of clover they form a chrysalis which then becomes a butterfly. The clover depends on healthy soil which has nutrients and living things that your eye can’t see but your nose can smell lets you know it’s there. Earthworms, mushrooms, oak trees, blue jays, and blackberries all play an important part to form honey from nectar. Enjoy the most beautiful illustrations in this adventure connecting honey and nectar using animation and graphic designs digitally. “EXPLORE MORE” continues the story with even more information for kids, teachers, and parents following the story.
