Animal Soup by Todd H. Doodler. This book combines two animals together to create a new and unusual animal. On each two page spread a brightly colored animal appears on each side describing one of their traits. When you lift the flap on the second page the new animal is revealed along with a new name for the creature. The first set of animals combined are a bird with wings and a slow turtle. As you lift the flap you’ll see bird + turtle = BIRDLE. This book is great to use with one child or in a group setting. Children will enjoy making up their own animals. Life-Size Zoo
Submitted by Ms. Melissa!
Life-Size Zoo by Teruyuki Komiya takes you “up close” to your favorite animals through actual size images. Travel through the picture book zoo to see just how large a tiger’s tooth is, or how far a giraffe’s tongue can reach. Even a trip to a real life zoo won’t get you this close! You’ll also get to meet animals like Yamato a German gorilla, and Kometaro an aardvark, to name a few. This book is cleverly illustrated with photographs, and features a side bar full of facts about each animal. If you happen to be stopping by the Lexington Park or Charlotte Hall library, take a look at our “Actual Size” height chart Learning Spot, made by Lindsay Alvey, the library’s summer intern last year! This Learning Spot is full of interesting facts about animals that may be your actual size, so come on by the library and learn an animal fact or two. See this book listed in our catalog
What Animals Really Like
Submitted by Ms. Tess!
What Animals Really Like is a book by Fiona Robinson, and a song by Mr. Herbert Timberteeth *wink wink* the beaver. This ambitious beaver has composed an operetta about what animals like most, starring all his friends. Lions like to prowl, wolves like to howl, pigeons like to coo, cows like to dig. Wait, what? Cows don’t like to dig! But apparently they do! The animals begin informing their frustrated conductor of the things they actually like to do, which aren’t in line with what the beaver, and the rest of us, might assume. For instance, the warthogs like to blow enormous bubbles! (They’re going for a world record!) And the shrimp like to ski! (Really! They just got back from Switzerland and had amazing weather.) Mr. Timberteeth finds out you can’t judge a book by its cover as he learns his song is all wrong and his friends have diverse hobbies and interests he’d never dreamed of! (Except the mice. They really do like cheese!) The book features fun fold out illustrations, and will hopefully inspire you and your little one to laugh and sing along to one of the silliest musical productions ever staged in children’s literature! Who Has These Feet?
Submitted by Ms. Tammy!
Who Has These Feet? by Laura Hulbert. This delightful picture book will have children taking a look at their own feet. The question “Who has these feet?” is asked over and over, while displaying a colorful picture of a set of feet. The following page shows what animal the feet belong to, and how they are adapted to their habitats. Each colorful two page spread shows the animal in action using their feet in amazing ways. The conclusion of the book brings all 9 animals together with the animal’s heads on one side with their feet on the opposite side asking “Who has these feet?” When the flaps are open, a full display of all the animals appear answering the question with “We have these feet!” See this book listed in our catalog
The Book with a Hole
Submitted by Ms. Janis!
The Book with a Hole by Hervé Tullet is very interactive, and will definitely use a child’s imagination to answer the questions on each page. There is a hole in the middle of the book, literally. The author wants the child to fill in the hole with an eyeball, a building, food, etc. The author has inventive ideas on every page. This will surely be a favorite with children that love to use their imagination. The author wants the readers to become active participants in the book. The Book with a Hole is a great book for imaginative play! See this book listed in our catalog
Press Here
Submitted by Ms. Catherine!
Press Here by Henré Tullet. When I was little, I always loved books that kept me involved. They could be the complicated ones that had buttons to push that made music, or fuzzy pages to represent bunny fur. Or it could be the “I Like to Help Mommy” book in which my mother would replace the main character’s name with my own so I could pretend it was about me! Henré Tullet’s new book, Press Here, is a fantastic interactive picture book that will stimulate the imagination of kids and adults! The book opens simply with a yellow dot and the direction to “press here and turn the page.” Where most books that give you this direction would make noise or light up, Press Here is different. The following page displays two dots with the text “Great! Now press the yellow dot again.” Instead of lighting up, this book engages the imagination of the person reading it. Each page follows the same pattern, showing a new illustration with a new set of directions. At first glance this may not seem all that engaging, but the simple directions and bright colors truly capture the attention of whoever is reading it. Adults and children alike will be mesmerized by this book. Don’t be surprised to find yourself pressing, turning, shaking, and following whatever other directions you find inside.
