That Pup! by Lindsay Barrett George is a great story about an adorable golden retriever having a good time digging in the yard. She smells an acorn and decides to dig for more acorns in various places around the yard. This lovable pup finds 10 acorns in all. The puppy happens to see a squirrel that is very sad. The squirrel wants to know why the pup has dug up all of the acorns that she buried for the winter. The pup immediately decides they can play a new game called “Put Back the Acorns.” The next page shows the puppy and the squirrel returning the acorns to their original spots. Snowmen At Night
Submitted by Ms. Carol!
Snowmen At Night by Caralyn Buehner is a cute story that tries to solve the mystery of what snowmen do at night. Have you ever wondered, when your snowman looks a little droopy, what snowmen do at night? This book has lots of interesting suggestions. Maybe snowmen wait until dark, then they slide onto the street, and into the park. Maybe they stand around with other snowmen drinking ice-cold cocoa. Maybe they have snowman races, and go ice skating. Maybe they play baseball, and have a snowball fight. Maybe they go sledding with all their snowman friends. After all that excitement they get sleepy, and return home. So if your snowman has lost his height, and his grin is crooked, read this book to find out what snowmen do at night! Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze!
Submitted by Ms. Amanda!
Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze! by Maureen Wright is a silly tale about the Autumn Breeze, a Big Bear, and the start of Autumn. It begins with Big Bear walking through the woods on a nice autumn day when, right as the wind blows, he lets out a big sneeze, and the leaves blow off the tree. Bear is so upset that his sneeze blew all the leaves from the tree that he tries to nail them back onto the branches. The wind tries to tell Big Bear that the leaves fell from the tree when the wind blew, but Big Bear believes that the leaves fell down when he sneezed ACHOO! The wind grows stronger as Big Bear walks on, till he comes to a tree where apples grow, and just as he approaches, he sneezes ACHOO! The tree branches shake in the wind’s strong gusts, and all the apples fall to the ground. Once again Bear thinks that his sneeze made them all fall down. Big Bear goes on sneezing through the forest, and misunderstanding the changes that autumn brings. Finally the Autumn Breeze explains that he causes the leaves and apples to fall from the tree, and even causes Big Bear’s sneeze. The illustrations and rhyme makes it a great story to read aloud to kids of all ages. See this book listed in our catalog
Owly & Wormy: Friends All Aflutter!
Submitted by Ms. Tess!
I was very excited (perhaps a little too excited) to discover that Andy Runton, creator of one of my absolute favorite graphic novel series, the Owly books, has a brilliant new picture book! Friends All Aflutter is in the same wordless style as Runton’s books for older kids, but in a new format, friendly for younger children. Much beloved characters Owly and Wormy are interested in butterflies. They figure they need to plant some flowers to attract butterflies, so they go to the nursery. But when their flowers bloom, there are caterpillars living in them instead! Owly and Wormy are mildly outraged by this turn of events, but grow extremely fond of the caterpillars over time. So fond, in fact, that they are terribly sad to learn their caterpillar friends must go away for the colder seasons! Owly and Wormy miss their new friends, but won’t they be surprised when they get the butterflies they originally wished for in the spring? Friends All Aflutter is charming in so many ways. I love how clearly Runton tells the story without any text. I love the message of friendship and devotion it delivers. I even love that when Owly has an idea it’s illustrated by the appearance of an energy efficient light bulb above his head! I’ve had the pleasure to meet Andy Runton, and have a book signed by him, and he was a super sweet guy, so I might be a little bias, but I assure you I am not the only person at this library that adores Owly. Every time I put an Owly book on display, it is checked out within 24 hours. Every single time. So I simply must implore you to do yourself and your little one a favor by checking out the sufficiently delightful Friends All Aflutter ASAP. I do not think you’ll be disappointed 🙂 See this book listed in our catalog
Pip & Squeak
Submitted by Ms. Carol!
Pip & Squeak by Ian Schoenherr is a cute winter story about two mice named Pip and Squeak. Their friend Gus is having a birthday party and they are running late. In all the rush they forget Gus’s birthday gift of cheese! Now they have to find Gus a present on their way to the party. They find flamingos, and a bird house, but decide that neither one would be good gifts for Gus since, of course, they are not cheese. Then they spot something big and orange right in the middle of a snowman face. They think it is cheese, so they scramble to get it, only to discover it is not cheese at all! They are out of time so they decide to give it to Gus anyway, even though he probably won’t like it. But Gus, being a rabbit, thinks their carrot present is just perfect!
