Here in St. Mary’s County, children are always in and out of our libraries. But in Lockhart, Texas, librarian RoseAleta Laurell couldn’t get any children to come to the library! The Dr. Eugene Clark Library didn’t have a children’s section. RoseAleta realized that something needed to be done. So, when simply asking for money for the library didn’t work, she decided to take things to the next level. RoseAleta decided that she wouldn’t come down from the library roof until the town raised enough money to build a children’s area for the library! In Librarian on the Roof, written by M.G. King, and illustrated by Stephen Gilpin, we see the story of RoseAleta Laurell unfold, with bright, fun illustrations, that will make you smile, and cheer along with the town of Lockhart, Texas as this librarian hero brings books to children of all ages. Based on a true story, this is a great book for children and parents to read together, and then talk about the importance of reading, and the importance of standing up for what you believe in! Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories
Submitted by Ms. Sue!
Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories by Audrey Penn, illustrated by Barbara L. Gibson. Making memories of the ones we won’t see anymore is one way to make you feel better about losing a loved one. Chester Raccoon’s mom explains to Chester and his friends how they can “make a memory” of their friend Skiddil Squirrel after he has had an accident and won’t ever be returning. Chester and his friends, the other forest animals, gather at Skiddil Squirrel’s favorite place, Butterfly Pond, where they remember things that happened to him there. Chester watches a butterfly resting on an acorn and, after waiting patiently for the butterfly to fly away, he picks up the acorn. With all the funny memories they recalled of their friend, Chester decides to take the acorn home to make a perfect memory. This story will help young children understand the meaning behind attending a funeral or a memorial service and how “making memories” can help them find comfort. See this book listed in our catalog

Help! A Story of Friendship

Help! A Story About Friendship by Holly Keller. Mouse and Snake have been friends for years, but one day gossip gets in the way. Fox tells Skunk, and Skunk tells Mouse: snakes are very dangerous, especially to mice! Mouse is scared and hides from his friend, even though Hedgehog is sure that Snake would never hurt either of them. But then Mouse, distracted by his fears, has an accident and gets hurt! Squirrel, Hedgehog, and Rabbit try to help but can’t. It’s up to Snake, even though his feelings are hurt, to show real friendship in Mouse’s time of need. This sweet story is illustrated by the author in a unique watercolor style called “collographs,” which resemble leaf rubbings and collage. The expressive animals and simple story convey a just-right message about friendship, gossip, and trust, that every child can understand. See this book listed in our catalog
